As I understand it, the "fixes" to the operating systems can be "lifted" if next generation processors have the problem solved, so I am now postponing my plans for building a new PC until I see how this plays out.

Oh, and I sort of agree with Intel that it's not really a bug.
But, it still needs to be dealt with. It will be expensive, and they will make all of us pay for it.
Well, shit. I literally just put a new i7 into my build last night. I haven't even fired it up yet.

AMD still in the clear?

Sucks, my laptop and the HTPC will be hit, but not my 8 year old system. Prices on Ryzen aren't likely to improve...

Should have jumped on the ryzen train when I had the chance. Unfortunately I got a steal on a 6600k.

Nah, sounds like AMD/Intel/ARM may all have this issue.

Not exactly. Intel is the only one with the "meltdown" issue... So far. That is what is being patched.

A second potential vulnerability exists, but x86 chips all have some tools to prevent... Intel and AMD alike. ARM may be just getting there. Knowing its being done right may be the problem.

Of course, Intel is downplaying this and talking of the shared potential problem. And it is... Only Intel has actual issues being patched, for the rest it remains potential.

Big mess.

Gamers likely won't care much. AWS just got 42% more expensive for equivalent compute...

It is my understanding that AMD claims to not have the issue. But that remains to be independently verified. It's possible that some of the the OS changes will be implemented across the board anyway, no pun intended.

There's a lot of speculation as to what the issue actually is, but my limited understanding of the recommended fix, after some digging, is that it should make starting processes slower, but once started things should speed back up. Though I'm likely wrong so

I heard Microsoft quietly rolled out a patch a few months ago to some unspecified group of systems. Caught some folks by surprise when the shortcut their software was using disappeared.

Ironically, the issue is actually in the speculation.

Best article I was able to find explaining Meltdown and Spectre.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/arstech...flaws/%3famp=1

Looks like there's going to be an opt-out if anyone cares, since no one is going to spend the time developing an attack against someones PC. Unless you are a millionaire.

Bottom line, this is definitely a PITA if you are paid to worry about IT and security. This isn't much of a problem for your average PC user.

I doubt you will notice anything wrong with it, unless you have some unusual use for said computer.
