Broken motor?

So my 13 frs has had a check engine light on for a while with a bad camshaft/crankshaft code. Was trying to diagnosed myself but couldn't figure it out, even after replacing the "problem" sensors. I ended up taking it into the dealership, and three weeks later I'm told that the motor needs more work from $4400-$10k. I told them to put it back together, and I'll pay for their labor. They say they can't garuntee that the car will run anymore. I asked why, and they put me on line with the tech. He said timing gears were off a bit, so fixed the passenger side and all was well. He moved to the drivers side "side with error code"when he relieved the pressure on the timing chain, the camshaft moved/turned, so he believes the camshaft is broken. Is this a common thing? I find it hard to believe a camshaft just breaks with stock na power. So I'm going to get it towed home to figure things out. What do you guys think it could be? Should I attempt to start it after checking the oil? Is it even worth trying to fix or should I sell it? I'm somewhat mechanically inclined but I've never pulled a motor or messed with internals besides an old carbed 350. Any help or insight will be greatly appreciated!

wtf. So he had it far enough apart to have the timing cover off but didn't just pop the valve cover off to check while he was there and then wants to say he thinks the cam is broken? Of course the cam moved, some of the lobes are under valve spring pressure. Find new shop.

Straight from the manual. Driver side is bank 2

You might NOT want to try and restart the engine. If the valve timing is off you could bend some valves.

What codes were you getting?

Broken camshaft??? I cannot ever remember hearing of a broken camshaft and I've been around longer than Ewoks have been on Endor.

My engine ejected 2 rocker arms which jammed and bent the exhaust cam and broke the timing chain.

Haha right, and he's the service tech at our Toyota dealership! It was throwing code p0018. Ok, so I'll plan on towing it home in a few days, where do you think I should go from there? I don't even k ow what to look for lol, I cam figure out how to get timing cover off from YouTube I'm sure but what should be done after that? There is no Subaru tech shop where I live in lake havasu. I already replaced the supposed bad camshaft sensor, so don't think it's that. I'm sure he would've told me a part of the timing gear came off.

There is a few things that can happen with a P0018, one of them is the learning values get skewed in the ECU and at that point, you basically need a new ECU. It's usually the cam sensor, or cam gear(AVCS). I believe valve lash has also caused this. But, catching P0016-P0019 early is important to prevent the learning values from getting eff'd.

I'd recommended taking a look at the service manual before attempting any repair, @Ultramaroon has it linked in his sig. If you can't figure out how to get the timing cover off then maybe you need to start talking with the dealership on them fixing it.

I appreciate all the help and insight from you all, ty. The dealership is putting car back together and it's being towed to another shop this weekend. They agrees not to start the car as they dont want to be liable. I never thought of the ecu going bad, worst case, I guess it's still better than a new motor. Having the repair manual is amazing, ty so much for that. I had a rat in the car at one point, so gonna have new mechanic look over the harness as well to see if maybe it got into the wiring. Hoping the mechanic finds it pretty easily, ill post an update when I can.

Heard back from new mechanic today, said the motor is siezed. I guess Toyota didn't do the valve lash timing and when they went to start the car some pistons hit the valves. So motor is shot...Certified motors are 4-5k plus labor, then possible clutch swap. So thinking cut my losses and sell what I can. Thanks for trying to help guys. Now to figure out its worth.

Congrats on the new car.

On the old one. The previous shop admitted to making a mistake taking the timing chain off. Prof of them not reading a warning from the MM.(Technician negligence) This directly caused damage to the valves. I think I would push the original shop for a fix for that. Problem is it left and now there is the question on the other shop could have damage the valves. It would be a battle but we are talking about a lot of money.

WTF just happened? Is it a Lake Havasu tradition to take it dry up the ass?

Yah I agree, just a mess. Dealer mechanic said to me what he did, i posted here, and you guys helped out! Basically said do not release tension on both camshafts at same time or one wil rotate and cause damage. Showed them the screenshot after the dealer mechanic told me thats what he did. Their response was he used the same book. Dealer Mechanic stated camshaft turned and was broken in half. Toyota is who I brought it too, basically said see you in court and wouldn't do anything, besides offer me 4k for a trade in and the new mechanic blames Toyota for not assemling it right. After dealer mechanic told me what he did I told them to reassemble it back to howbit was when I brought it in. Unfortunately, they didn't,The valve timing was off and when he turned it over valves hit the pistons we assume. Rotsting it by hand it stops before a full revolution. They are a big company I'm just a single broke guy, I feel fighting it will just be worse, sometimes, it isn't worth the fight. I made a fuss, hoot and hollered, just got me nowhere. Life goes on, just dint use Anderson in lake havasu haha
