Those who've had 1st and 2nd gen - real world mpg difference?

There have been some threads on gas mileage with the second generation BRZ. I'm curious if there are any people here who have owned both a first and a second generation car, what are your observed real world differences in gas mileage?

With my 2019 I routinely see better mileage than the EPA ratings. Have averaged 32.3 mpg since buying the car (over 6,400 miles), and regularly see 35+ mpg in 70+ mpg highway cruising.

The BRZ isn't an 'economy' car and that's not why I'm looking to get a second gen car. The EPA ratings for the second gen car are astonishingly low, 20/27 mpg (which seems very surprising for a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder).

What say ye, those that have owned both generations of car?

Thanks!

I only have had a 2nd gen. But yeah, I'm not sure where they got those estimates from...

I've averaged 29.8 mpg over the 3700 miles I've driven mine. It goes up or down a tenth every now and again so I think that's pretty much what I'm getting regularly. That's mostly city driving and short (5-10 minute) highway stretches. It sees redline several times pretty much daily too.

When I tracked it with a higher percentage of highway driving it got more like 32-33.

Negligible difference.

Both gen1 BRZ I owned and gen2 GR86 I own now did/do 29-30 MPG on a 2+ hour highway drive from my home to Thunderhill at ~80 mph cruising speed.

I have both and still frequently drive both, there is no noticeable difference between the 2.

Are you guys taking these figures from the in-car MPG calculator or doing the math at fill-up? I know for our Gen-2 there is definitely a difference between the two.

I did calculate, not as good as dadhawk. There maybe a bigger impact for non-bumper-to-bumper city driving (my case) vs highway.

Only a Gen 2 owner here. I've only done the calculations on highway road trips and don't bother in daily driving since I only have a fairly short suburban/semi-rural commute.

On the couple of 400+ mile road trips I've taken MPG has averaged out around 29 mpg at speeds of 70~75 mph. Actually much better than I expected. I found I get much better mileage driving manually and not using cruise control.

I track it in the FUELLY app now so I get every refill. Before that, I sent myself a text with the info, then tracked it in a spreadsheet. Almost 80% of my driving is over the same round (80 mile roundtrip commute) and I almost always fill up at the same station, using the same pump. I average bout 50MPH on the commute with speeds from 25MPH to 65MPH.

The MAX tank at 40MPH was highway miles, relatively flat terrain (S. GA to Mid FL) at a speed averaging 75MPH.

With both highway and daily driving my 2014 said I got 28MPG combined. My 23 says I get 22MPG combined.
