Trading in 2nd gen and options

I don’t know where to post this but I’m looking for someone’s opinion.

My gf has a premium metallic gray 2023 brz 6mt, ceramic tint/ brz factory rubber floor mats and cargo net bone stock with 7200 miles on it.
She got in a minor fender bender where someone came in her lane and damaged her wheel and dented door/front fender. No air bag deployed no structural damage. 2200$ to professionally fix.

Due to her now medical reasons she is trying to get into a forester.

Two dealerships we took it to be appraised offered her 23000$ Kbb says 27-28 even with minor accident.

In this particular case wouldn’t it be advantageous to just privately sell? What’s your thoughts? We’re in sc if that matters.

Thanks

Yes sell privately. Don’t give to a stealership. It might take longer and the accident does not help. Good luck.

The dealer will buy from you, make a good profit, and sell it on. So yes, they want to make about 5K on the car... has to pay for their building, overhead, etc. Much better off to sell it yourself. But would be hard, unless you had it repaired and looking nice. Seasonality might be an issue, but doubt it will have an impact in SC. Things are a little slow for Xmas though.... Otherwise, keep in mind that people trust a big fancy business (yes, even a stealership) more than someone they meet in a parking lot.... so you will NOT be able to sell it for the same $$ the dealer can. Nevertheless, fix it up if you can and sell it yourself, maybe slightly cheaper than a dealer would sell so everyone wins. (PS: Keep pictures of the accident damage so you can show prospective buyer how minor it was, if the issue comes up... )

I would also get a quote from Carmax or Carvana. From there look at all three options, trade/sell/private sale, and see which works out the best.

Does SC give you sales tax credit if you trade in a vehicle at a dealership? In my area, doing a trade knocks off a huge amount of sales tax on the new vehicle and it may be something to factor into the decision...if your state does that.

Another vote give Carvana a try. I dont know how much their algo weights a clean history, but it gave me an insane offer for my '19 GLI when I was looking to get the BRZ earlier this year and it seems to like "rare" cars like the BRZ.

SC sales tax caps at $500. OP will probably get more selling privately or selling to a 3rd party. As mentioned, I'd definitely check with Carvana and CarMax.

I would check with the dealer and see if they will make you a better deal on a new Forester since you're bringing a trade to the table. I typically don't mess with trying to sell cars privately anymore because I hate dealing with deadbeat/tirekickers.

Do I lose some money to the dealer? Yep, but it's worth it to me to not have the hassle.

try vroom, carvana, shift. See what each will give you go that route. Screw private sellers. And honestly I would never buy a car that's been any accident and drive it on the road. Track car different story.

Was this a hit and run deal and you are left holding the bag? Is the $2,200 your out of pocket expense? Why?

Does the car have a Subaru Added Security extended warranty? Your options are to offer to transfer to the new owner to enhance a private sale or cash in what dollar value it has and apply the proceeds to the new car. Personally, I am done with private sale of motor vehicles and the accompanying annoyances. In anticipation of ordering a '22 BRZ, I had a number of interested parties wanting to buy my '17 BRZ Limited. One guy was working up the courage to get spousal approval, another asked if I would take payments and the rest were qualified, but undecided. I got an offer from CarMax for $25k and made it clear that they had until the CarMax offer expired to make a deal. I got the feeling that CarMax had already had it sold and was waiting for me to hand over the keys.
