Just to be clear I don't have FK510s on the car now. My father has them on his 335i. They're dirt cheap for what they are. But the tire behavior was easily noticeable compared to what he had before(conti ECS)

I am currently on a Michelin PS4S in 215/45R17 on an 8" wheel. Found a gently used set for way to cheap on local classifieds last summer and could not say no!

I had settled on a set of Indy 500s before the Michelin deal popped up.

The pricing on FK510 is tempting as they're so cheap. $150 a tire CAD.
While doing some comparison the RT615k were also $150(only in a 215), RT615k+ were $170, but a bit overkill for mainly street use. Indy 500 are also $150, compared to $220 for ECS and $250 for PS4S.

Could you share your impressions between the Indy 500s and the PS4Ss? A lot of people rave about the bang for the buck of the Indy's, but all independent tests (TireRack and others) don't really agree with that.

The Firehawks FEEL really good and responsive (light handling comments in tire rack's tests) because their sidewall is stiff. but they lack predictability, some dry grip, and a lot of wet grip.

That's very interesting. Would the more expensive tires (ECSs and PS4Ss) match the Indys' feel on top of the improved grip?

The hankook v12 evo2 is pretty damn close and has almost PS4 grip levels. It's not really a question of price but a tradeoff between feel and comfort. Depends what the manufacturer decided to focus the tire on.

I would not put the V12 and the PS4 in the same league.
While the V12's are a great comfortable street tire. They are not as precise or resistant to heat as the PS4. So don't expect to be doing any track days with the V12's.

You're right, they're closer to the old PSS. Maybe that's what my brain meant.

Another (possible) consideration: if you're like me and live in an area where you (legally) need M+S rated tires for part of the year, and you don't want to bounce back and forth between winter and summer rubber, the Pilot Sport A/S 3+ are a pretty decent tire in my experience.

I can't really imagine a grippier tire - a few months in and *still* every twig and road rock is picked up like a hoover and is thrown up into the wheel wells, especially noticeable at low speeds.

They work like a champ in heavy wet weather too. I have not taken them to a track or anything but I have not been able to get them to break loose on the back end for any appreciable distance/time on the street (unlike the stock tires)....and they sell them at Costco so you can get warranty (if needed) anywhere in North America that you happen to be in = nice piece of mind for road trips.

Just my 2 Cents (about 1.5 cents US these days!)

How stiff are the sidewalls? I'm currently on an old set of PSSs, and I'd like to have a little less grip so I don't have to wring the shit out of it to get some rotation, but not at the expense of turn in.

I think they would be considered pretty stiff. I got the higher speed/load rated ones ($5 difference).

Nice information in here, thanks for sharing. I'm currently on spent PSS that I have two summers on. Seeing this discussion has steered me to the PS4.

To add input. I had some Yokohama AOD8Rs that came with a set of enkei RPF1 wheels. They were about 50% when I got them. They are a super good tire for this car, top of the budget for sure. But having ran them for two summers, they can take a beating and hold up well. As with most high grip tires I've run yet, namely these two, once the tread gets too low, you lose grip. Not catastrophically, but it falls off pretty quickly once you get about a millimeter to two from the wear bars. You'll start slipping out in your spirited corners and drift a bit.

I just sent the old PSS's over that edge the past two weeks.
