It is a mask. Those that used them tended to live longer than those that did not. They knew that so used them.

The point remains that 700 years ago when the bulk of the public thought that diseases were the result of witchcraft or the wraith of god there was at least a small segment that recognized that if you avoid breathing the air around you you stood a better chance of not getting sick.

If only a fraction of the energy that the general population, elected officials, and public health 'experts', spent on passive-aggressive needling of those who identify with a different tribe was instead spent on learning basic ppe usage this pandemic would largely be in the rear view mirror (at least in North America and Western Europe)
