Fuel pump assembly: Fuel pressure regulator popping out

The fuel pressure regulator is popping out of the fuel pump assembly, which is in the tank. It is just a push in device.

It pops out after I prime the fuel system. You can hear the pump priming, and after the third prime, BANG, it's now sitting in the bottom of the fuel canister and I have no fuel pressure.

Has anyone experienced this before or know why it could be happening?

There is a small plastic brackets that holds the pressure regulator in place. It also is the piece that holds the stock fuel pump filter. I cut off the piece from the stock filter assembly and now the regulator is staying in place.
