People who defend buying this car with auto transmissions are the worst. They don't even have the courage to stand up for what's right.

I think both AT and MT has the same engine tune (at least for 1st gen pre 2017). So if you just drag race them, which one is faster really depends on the gearing ratio and shifting speed. So there won't be a definite answer.
On the race track pushing for lap times, MT is likely to have lower lap time with a pro driver due to better gearing ratio and no overheating which happens a lot on AT 86s. Unlike some other performance car with AT transmission, like A90 Supra. The AT on 86 twins are not particularly fast in shifting and the ratio is more tuned for fuel economy, which does not always put engine in its most powerful band. But still, I feel you are worrying about the drag race results between a MT and AT 86, you are buying the wrong car. There are some other similar priced cars which are more suitable for these tasks. |

The 5 HP difference with the first gen was nothing, it was all gearing..I had both with first gen, automatic was definitely slower. 2nd gen supposedly uses pretty much same ratios between MT and AT. So yes if MT driver is slow at downshifting, the new AT GR86 could definitely beat a MT GR86. But if they are racing off the line you would have to be pretty bad at shifting to lose to the AT being that it is heavier and shifting speeds aren't incredibly fast.

The 5hp was at the crank, So nothing to do with the type of transmission or its ratios.

There was a Japanese video put up in a thread somewhere here where they drag raced a gr86 against several cars, including MT vs AT. The mt had a little edge, but a tenth here and there, what does it even matter. For me the manual shifting of these cars is part of the reason i have it, but others might habe other préférences, so chose whatever you want, just try it first

This is correct, the AT in the twins is slower than the MT. It’s a slushbox, not a dedicated performance box like a DCT or even the amazing ZF 8sp, plus the AT gearing is designed for economy rather than acceleration. Toyobaru just aren’t that concerned with trying to make the AT quick, so unlike most sports cars these days, the twins are one of those rare cases where the MT is still quicker than the AT.

Feels like we're going full circle, back to the MT/AT comparisons on a new gen. What's next, Supercharger and Turbo comparisons?

Turbo lag sucks. Supercharger whine sounds better too. Ok. That was fun.
