3 hours into Hogwarts Legacy as the edition came with 72 hours of early access. Release is 2/10/23

Game is gorgeous. The castle is massive and I can tell there’ll be quite a bit of a selection for spells. Combat is great and so far no frame stuttering or bugs. Playing on ultra 4k settings with FSR set to Quality.

It looks pretty good, but for some reason I've always had a completely irrational hatred of anything Harry Potter related.

I disliked it before that was the cool thing to do.

i'm old fashioned. i still like to run a dvd-r/w drive. and my current setup has a 5.25 fan controller panel i'd likely integrate into the newer build as well, though the bios fan control is supposed to be much better than the old x58 sabertooth board i'm running now.

How often do you use the DVD drive? If it's less often than once a month you might want to consider an external drive instead.

I'll second the external drive for a better case. Also yes... If you have pwm fans in particular, bios or software control is so much better. I've set fan curves and they are silent most times, ramp up when in use. I had to get past the drive thing myself... I've used it 10 times in 2+ years. Already had the external for laptops. Same issue for me with sd?cf cards when I take photos. External is slightly less convenient. No regrets.
That said... I understand.

You create your own flash drive these days. Download direct.
If you're done with the old computer you may be able to just "upgrade hardware" on the old license.

I would seriously consider a 6800xt over that 3060ti for the same price, a 3060ti for $540 is a huge stretch in terms of value. You can find 3060ti's all day in the $450 range, IMO spending $540 on one would put you in a completely different tier of performance (go 6800xt if you don't care about raytracing or 3070ti).

Also why not 13600 vs the 12700? It's the better CPU across the board

I hated it till people started dying on the regular.

Picked up the Asus ROG Zephyrus 14 for a really good deal! I got it not because I need a gaming laptop, per se, but because I also need a computer for work. We were supposed to be issued laptops well over a year ago, but the people who are in charge are too lazy. So I figured, if I'm going to get a laptop, why not get something I can do work and game with! The specs also seem pretty damn good too. Ryzen 7 and a 3060 means I can enjoy many of the games I typically play. But I also don't plan do really play that many anyway.

definitely some improvements i could make. i'm was mostly playing. i didn't research anything, just spec-sheet-raced to an end result.

i'm still attached to the stigma that any i7 is a better processor than any i5..

Top of the line i5s have, for the most part, been the Intel sweet spot for gaming. Less expensive in both dollars and watts than the i7 or i9, yet fast enough that your typical game limitation is always going to be graphics. Removing the overhead of the extra cores lets you overclock with less, and therefore more stable, total power if you feel the need for more speed.

Basically, in order to get the most out of the i9s for example, you have to also buy a really expensive motherboard and a bigger power supply. It's great if you are a numbers junkie, but it doesn't really improve the experience unless you have specific processor-intensive work.
