At some point, you have to put your money somewhere, and having it all sitting around in cash isn't going to work (well, unless you are the Joker). Jay Leno has a car collection because he loves cars, but also because it is an investment for him. A large majority of the vehicles are really just storage devices for his money, he buys what will appreciate or is expected to appreciate, plus a few that are just toys. It's a whole different world.

To me, the philosophical difference between a supercar and artwork is that artwork is meant to sit in a museum or in a display case or on the wall, while a car is supposed to be driven.
A lot of supercars are very beautiful pieces of art, but they have an identity crisis...it feels wrong to let them sit in the garage, but it also feels wrong to me to drive something so ludicrously fast on public roads, while dedicated track cars are much better for lapping tracks. I've driven a Tesla Model S and I just thought it was pretty frustrating that I couldn't bury my foot in the pedal for more than a second before blowing through the speed limit. You can wind out your McLaren or Ferrari in 1st gear and that's the end of the fun. When it comes to collectible cars, I feel like it's a bit like putting a nice painting in a public display where random people can damage it with flash photography or touching. Say you have your really nice 964 or NSX or 348 sitting in the garage...they're great street cars, but do you really want to take it out and risk damage? I suppose if you had access to lots of OEM replacement parts maybe it could be justified. Personally speaking, I'd rather have a nice GT for feeling coddled, something like a Lotus for having fun, and a dedicated track car for excitement and speed. |

Oh yea, I plan on doing Speedvegas someday too. That said, I feel like getting into a Radical PR6 or Stohr WF1 would feel like more of an occasion, even if the engine noises aren't quite as good as a V-a-million supercar.
I definitely plan on owning a single seat D sports racer someday when I can afford to just have something like that taking up space. I'm just really hoping the new Lotus model coming out next year is going to be naturally aspirated so I can have that as my street car. |
