The new Supra is not a 'Supra' regardless of what the PR/Marketing papers say and the letters on the back lid have spelled out.

The car is a modern interpretation of the 1960s 2000GT. The car should be called a '3000GT'; however, Mitsu has that name, so Toyota was out of luck and resorted to the "Supra" moniker.

If we, all of the enthusiast car community, get over the fact the car is called 'Supra' and think of it more as a 2000/3000GT, then we should all sleep better at night...yes?

Some will argue that Toyota would have disgraced the 2000GT name by making a successor out of BMW parts, but that is what is being said/happening about this "Supra"; so does it really matter what Toyota called their car? Everyone would still be in conniption mode because the car is 85% BMW (and no manual).

I'm not in the market for a $50k car, so I don't care what it's called. But, to me, this car is more of a 2000/3000GT, in name.

Will Toyota's own RC300 F Sport and RC350 be the most direct competitor to the "Supra"?

Wait for the 4cyl Turbo version ….. if …. if that becomes available in the USA in 2-4 years from now. It would be 100-150 lbs lighter, write ups say better weight balance then the 6cyl , and would be better MPG then the 6cyl. Plus is the 3L is about 380 torque , that's about 125 torque per liter. The 4cyl produces about the same amount of torque per liter, but I thought I read the upper end 4cyl is about 280 torque.

Then playing on the fact this new toyota is based on a Z4, it could have been called the "4000GT", not only to play into the number 4 (as in Z4), but it would have been the next higher number, in succession, to the (Supra) 3000GT as in video #1. A "4000GT" could be a respectable name.

I guess, we should expect "Celica" [Si-LEE-ka...or...SELL-i-ka] to pop up next in the model name rotation, so Toyota can reinvent itself.

Maybe they (Toyota) should have called it the 6000SUX; seems to be the most appropriate name at this point.

BTW, the 86 was supposed to be the design resurrection of the 2000GT. You can clearly see the inspiration if you put them side by side, which Toyota actually did in many of the early marketing photos and exhibits. The "space invaders" shape on the reverse light and embedded in the plastic accents is actually the shape of the 2000GT badge, hidden all around the car as a tribute to the original.

So the 86 is in the way of a line between the 2000GT and the new Supra. The Supra really seems to be something else entirely. Not that it follows from the old Supra, just as the 86 has almost nothing in common with the AE86 it's named after. Both of those names are just marketing stunts to draw in fanboys who will drink any koolaid Toyota offers them.

Third, it's automatic only and 3300+ lb. Starting to move away from sports car territory and into GT territory.


I just feel like it's a confusing proposition. Sports car enthusiasts will likely shy away because of the weight and/or lack of manual transmission. At $50k, you've got actual sports cars like Corvettes and used Caymans available.

Not sure the MT vs AT is as big a deterrent as people think.

Two seconds of searching found the breakdown of Corvette sales AT vs MT. In 2016, A total of 40,689 Corvettes were produced. Of those 31,440 had AT transmissions (77.3%). Had the manual not been available, how many sales to you think Corvette would have lost? I'm guessing not a lot.

A lot of ppl said the same thing about 86/BRZ. $25k~$35k price tag, we have so~~~~~ many option to buy more functional, bigger space, powerful cars. So why are we still owning 86/BRZ? Because everyone have different quirk and wants/needs from the car. You'll be surprised a lot of ppl are interesting in buying this car. I know one dealership already have over 50 ppl on the list to buy new Supra.

Toyota isn't planning to mass produce this car to begin w. It'll be very small production per year.

FYI A80 Supra or US call it MkIV Supra is GT car more than sports car. So GT part haven't changed one single bit.

To add, some sports car enthusiasts still admire and wanting to own GT-R (R35) and new NSX, even though it only comes AT. Porsche did AT only for 911 few yrs back, but I feel like that was strategic planning on their marketing side. To add to AT list, look at Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren and other hyper cars brands in there.

So to answer your question, Supra will sell perfectly fine.

Only enthusiast who are YouTubers who need a new car for their channel will be buying these. A regular person is not going to be walking into a Toyota dealership and buying a 50K sports car.
