I suggest you NOT get a gun.

Why not?

Because you strike me as the type that would hesitate to use it. If you hesitate too long, the bad guy is liable to take it away from you and shoot you with it.

I would suggest you buy and keep by your front door a baseball bat. See, I figure most homeless folks don't carry guns but they may carry a knife. So, if they try to break into your apartment, just slam them in the head with your bat. Repeat as necessary.

Since I'm too damn old to use a bat as a weapon, I rely upon my WWI trench knife to greet people that-I-don't-know, at the door.

Remember - the best home defense is ..... DON'T OPEN THE FUCKING DOOR!

^i had a couple different responses typed up like that, but didn't want to come off as too anti-gun in a gun thread guns aren't bad, but i have objections to people that specifically own them only for home defense. like my boss who insisted on getting a 9mm after 2 break-ins in his subdivision, but refuses to ever go to a range to practice. to my knowledge, he's never fired a gun in his life. to me, he's created more of a hazard with the gun than without. people that practice know how to use it more efficiently, and start to understand that walls don't stop bullets from going into the kids rooms.

i completely agree on the baseball bat. cheap, legal, no practice needed. and anyone screaming and swinging one comes off as crazy, which is bonus points to ward off other attacks. when dealing with bad people, it's important to always be the craziest in the room. no one screws with crazy.

I love the guys who get a .45 for home defense. The thing will go thru multiple walls.

My main home defense weapon is a short barreled shotgun, and the first round is bird shot. If that doesn't get their attention, the next 7 rounds are buckshot.

You have to shoot. If you don't know how to use your weapon without thinking about it, you won't know how when the shit hits the fan and you are scared and your blood turns to pure adrenaline.

For homeless bums, I would get a bat and a big can of pepper spray to keep near the door.

Yep, 41 rounds out of that pup should thin out that homeless camp in your front yard. -

If you are interested have you considered taking a class? If nothing else you come out with some knowledge and experience. A lot of times they will work you through safe handling as well as local laws on the matter.

best time i ever had at the range was watching a big burly tough guy that's never shot before walk up to the line with his brand new 45, lines up down range, fires, and screams as the gun jumps out of his hands.

That reminds me of the time I took my daughter (she was about 14 years old) to an indoor range to become familiar with firing my .45 ACP. As her coach I stood beside her when she fired and noticed she would jump after she fired.

I ask her what was wrong and she said that the spent cartridges were burning her. I then noticed she was wearing a short sleeved blouse and that she was shooting left handed -

I could understand that response if he was shooting 45......../70

I’ve gravitated toward a .9mm CZ P07 for range use and home defense. It fits my hand really well. I installed Cajun Gun Work’s Pro-grade Kit and an Inforce APLc weaponlight. With the upgraded trigger and heavier action spring it’s a dream to shoot. The trigger placement really works for me. The extra weight of the light out front also helps mitigate perceived recoil. I’m a fan of handguns for home defense because it leaves one hand free to flip light switches and open doors.

I didn't know CZ made large scale BB guns

Lol. Yup. They do.

I actually enjoy shooting smaller cartridges quite a bit more, but .9mm is a good compromise, reasonably cheap to shoot for someone like me who doesn’t reload, and hopefully won’t completely destroy my ears if I need to use it indoors.

Spencer model of 1882.

One of the first successful pump-shotguns. Sadly, I picked this one up with a shattered wrist. I pieced it back together as best I could, with wood glue, walnut sanding dust, and dye, and filled a void in the toe. It’s only a cosmetic fix, but I’m honestly not interested in shooting it anyway. I think it would require finding reloadable brass of the correct dimension and then hand-loading them with black powder. I’ve had it apart, and it’s very interesting mechanically, with a heavy pivoting breech block powered by a forged leaf spring that throws empties straight out the top.
