Why do most people seem to think castrol edge titanium is a bad choice?

I got my hands on some castrol edge titanium 0w20 but after reading on these forums i heard alot of people saying it was crap just wondering if i should swap it out for something else?

Thanks

People just love to make statements without backing it up with some data. Any API SM/SN ILSAC GF4/GF5 will be fine for most people and perhaps some oils are better than others. But to say any certified oil is crap without data is just silly. And by data, I don't mean one or two random uoa's, a voa, or a product data sheet.

Thank you, drive through.

I think a lot of people just hate on Castrol because they're the ones that started the "synthetic" oil thing in the US, leading almost every manufacturer to substitute real synthetic with highly refined dino oil to at least a degree in their oils. A lot of people still don't like them for that.

The most interesting thing to me is Pennzoil. For the longest time they only made "crap" oil according to everyone on the car world. Then all of a sudden that titanium or whatever comes out and tons of people think it's the bee's knees.

The people calling that oil crap are probably the same people that swear up and down that "Mobile 1" [sic] is the best oil on the planet.

I never said it was bad oil; it isn't. Simply because it's such a popular, widely available oil, there are many who use it because of its image and market presence. Also, it's Mobil 1, not Mobile 1.

I have seen 2 motors that where torn apart both had Castrol run through it and they had the most sludge build up I have ever seen. That is why I am not a Castrol fan. I read a article once the sludge build up was based on the oil base was a plant base with a high wax content but cannot find the article so please do not quote me.

Normally it is Mobil1 for me in cars as I have never had an issue. On the fr-s I use oem as it gets factory oil changes. Really old motors I run valvoline or brad penn for the zinc additive which is hard to find.

I think as long as its oil and changed within the milage interval I would imagine it can only be so bad.

Because they refuse to release the HTHS numbers for their oil in the US. Numbers were found for some of their oils in Europe and they were very low.

That said, it still meets the minimum requirements. So I'll use it in the winter. But when driving weather comes back, better oil goes in.

Are you referring to wax isomerization? Many base oil suppliers (there are only a few for the entire industry) use this process for Group II and Group III base oils, including ExxonMobil and Shell.

Now if someone can provide data that oils derived from wax isomerization produce poor quality oils, then I'm all ears.
