Exclamation Will the new Supra kill the resale value of my 86

I've been binge reading about the new Supra and I'm filed with dread about the 86.

Toyota said 2018 is going to be the last 86. That combined with the new Supra, why would anyone want to buy our used 86? (Especially mine since I did 72 months financing)

What about insurance costs being higher since parts won't be easily available since production is ending?

Will our only source of parts be from Subaru?

I'm already dreading the comment next year. "just remember, it's an 86 not a Supra" just like the Jeep jerks say to Forrester owners, it's not a Jeep.

Everyone here is very excited about the new Supra but will this make our 86 the red headed step child of Toyota which gets put to for adoption?

At the very least Toyota should show some loyalty to us and continue production for a few more years

You do realize the alleged Supra is going to cost twice as much as a new 86.
The majority of people can not afford the new alleged Supra. Some die hards might. But expected price range can have worthy contenders.

As for loyalty, nope. Unless new heads come in that want to reignite the affordable sporty car craze they had going in the 90's

Either let the aftermarket take over parts like they currently do for all 90's Toyotas or jump ship and find a new RWD sport car platform.

Don't know what to tell about your 72 month loan, if you love your car and want to keep it forever, then don't worry about jack shit.
If you are worried about resale value, sell car before you owe more they your car is worth. Keep a daily eye on the blue book value.

As for insurance expect it to remain the same, if not it might actually go up since young kids can be able to get them super cheap.

So...yeah your screwed. I think.... or not.

Toyota said 2018 is going to be the last 86. Where? There has not been one word from Toyota on the future of the car.

That combined with the new Supra, why would anyone want to buy our used 86? (Especially mine since I did 72 months financing) At the difference between $15,000 and $50,0000 I can think of about 35,000 reasons.

What about insurance costs being higher since parts won't be easily available since production is ending? Parts is a very very very tiny part of insurance values as AC said the younger drivers may drive the cost up way more

Will our only source of parts be from Subaru? Subaru does not make car parts they buy them as well. If there is enough aftermarket demand the parts will still exist.

I'm already dreading the comment next year. "just remember, it's an 86 not a Supra" just like the Jeep jerks say to Forrester owners, it's not a Jeep. The comment would be true. It isn't a supra. Comparing the two would be silly at best.

Everyone here is very excited about the new Supra but will this make our 86 the red headed step child of Toyota which gets put to for adoption? Far from "everyone" is excited. Even once it's released most will find some excuse not to actually buy it.

At the very least Toyota should show some loyalty to us and continue production for a few more years Why should they show "loyalty" to a microscopic segment of their sales? They are a for profit business not a car charity.
This stuff is gold!

The new Supra only comes in autotragic trim.

If you are worried about resale value, should buy a Corolla instead.

Our car has poor resale anyways. Cars like this aren't really meant to be investments. Enjoy the next six years at least.

Not sure jeep owners care about the forester either, it's one of the best value holding vehicles on the market while jeep resale tanks unless it's a wrangler or srt8.

I call BS regardless. There is no way they would spend the money on a quite significant refresh and then only run that for two model years.

Not really accurate either. The car is a strong average. Yes, some have less depreciation but just as many have more. These are someplace right in the middle.

There is no car made that is a sure thing as an investment. There are people that lost their shirts with super cars that were "guaranteed" to make money and there are guys with oddball stuff that is worth a fortune (the one museum in Vegas had a 65 Biscayne you could buy for a measly $250,000. A freakin' Biscayne). If anybody buys any kind of car for an investment they need to just park it and never put any miles on it. Sort of defeats the purpose of buying a car for most.
