Speeding ticket study

I’m not a Fox News guy, but I saw this story on my Apple News feed today and had to take a look:

https://www.foxnews.com/auto/vehicle...-tickets-study

So to sum it up, an insurance company made a study to see which cars had a greater chance of getting speeding tickets. Here’s a cut and paste:

“Number one on the list is the Subaru WRX, a high-performance compact sedan inspired by rally-racing cars that came in with a score of 20.12 percent. It was followed by the Scion FR-S (19.09), Volkswagen GTI (16.92), and Hyundai Genesis Coupe (15.75) sports cars.”

Not sure if they are grouping the 86 into that, but come on guys, now I know why my insurance rate is so damn high!

They are not including the 86 or BRZ into that statistic.

A representative for Insurify told Jalopnik that the Scion FR-S category only includes the Scion FR-S, not its mechanical twin, the Subaru BRZ, or its Toyota successor, the 86. Neither of those made the top 10, despite two other Subarus being on the board. Maybe it’s because Scion was for those #reckless #kids.

I always find it funny when someone links something from Fox News and feels they have to throw in a disclaimer so they don’t get obliterated by social justice warriors. Hahaha

Similar to the gun topic, it isn’t the car it’s the driver but if the insurance company doesn’t have a lot of history on you then I guess they have to fall back on the statistics of the car. I’ve been with StateFarm for 20 years and have never made a single claim. Insurance on my FRS isn’t much different from any of my past cars. When I was first insured with StateFarm I had an Integra GSR and paid $250 per month until I turned 21 and then it dropped dramatically. When I was younger I had TONS of speeding tickets and always rode that fine line of having my license suspended for having too many points. These days I get a ticket maybe once every 3 years. I’ve never seen my insurance go up from a ticket though. Not even when I got 4 or more per year.

I’ve not gotten a ticket in my FRS yet. Knock on wood.

Skewed data is skewed

The team compiled a top-10 list, which classifies the percentage of drivers with a particular model who have past speeding tickets versus those who don’t, not the percentage of speeding tickets compared to drivers as a whole.

More than 20 percent of WRX buyers included in the study had past speeding tickets, for example, giving it the top spot on the list. About 11.3 percent of U.S. drivers have a past speeding ticket, the study said, making the WRX about twice the average.

OK so they are not comparing apples to apples.

The study was done by a U.S.-based insurance-comparison company Insurify, which said it sifted through its database of more than 1.6 million applications for car insurance. Since drivers have to put in personal and vehicle information to apply for quotes, including the model of the car and past speeding woes, the research team had plenty of numbers to compare

All of the cars on the list were pretty normal ones, probably because the folks with the louder, faster, more expensive cars either know better than to call attention to themselves on public roads or they don’t care to waste their time shopping around for the lowest insurance rates on some comparison website

The source of the data sets the bias right from the get go.

Dodge Dart: 14.86 percent
(Shout out to the Dodge Dart for always remainingnewsworthy, somehow.)

This is hilarious!

I’ve been driving an Integra or 86 all my life and I’ve never gotten a speeding ticket. I clearly don’t drive fast enough!

Never had a speeding ticket in my 15 years of driving and I think it's been at least 10 years since I've seen flashing lights.

Also, I've had a lease that covers insurance for the last 6 years and will have the current one for another 2 years. I wonder what my first insurance quote will look like when I finally need it? Not sure if an 8 year gap in coverage is a red flag.

You misread. It doesn't say they are likely to get them, it says they have received them at some point in some time. It doesn't even say they received them while driving said car. As studies go, I don't know how it could be more useless.

The sad part is that about 50 different "news" sites have taken this data and run with it. Every single one I read came to the same mistaken conclusion that it is the cars that are getting ticketed not the whole history of the driver. This whole study is BUNK!

As the discussion has pointed out it is the owners of FRS's that get the tickets. Some could have been years before they had one. They probably all had STi's (the car not the infection) before the FRS so really the STi number should be 40% if we use the methodology of this study.

I've owned my FR-S for over four years now,and not only have I not gotten a speeding ticket,I've never even been pulled over in this car(knock on wood). Every other car that I've ever owned,I've been pulled over at least once.

Side note,I was just out in the PNW on vacation and got busted doing 80 in a 60 on I-5,about 15 miles south of Everett WA. Washington State Police are sneaky little bastards! Didn't even see him until he was in my rear view mirror. Lead foots, beware!
