Why Porsche is one of the most confusing brands in the world.

Lets look at the 911, the classic 911 is from 63-89 which is basically just referred to as the 911 I.E. Classic 911. After 89 you have the "964" 911, wait did they just put another number to a car that already has a number? Soon after that you have the "993" 911 (94-97), the "996" 911 (1998-2004) , 997 (2005-2011) and the current gen model which is the 991 (2012+).

But i can understand why they did this, if you have a 993 Carrera then you can tell it from a 996 Carrera.

Now the order of these numbers don't make any sense themselves, how the fuck do we go from 996 to 997 then jump all the way back to 991?

People confuse the 996 and 991's as different cars, not as 911's of which they are. It even goes as far to confuse a 914 or a 924 as a 911, because they all fucking start with 9.

Why is the 918 being made now when the 912 and 914 were later 60/70 models? Eh?

Better yet the "Cayman" is always confused with the "Cayenne" even though the Cayman is a mid engine sports car and the Cayenne is a rich soccer moms toy.

Don't even get me started with the 911 "Carrera" names, so many fucking different kinds just blow my mind. They even went as far to make a car called the Carrera GT which wasn't even a 911!

'76-'83- 3.0L motor

All of those have various series in between, Porsche are tweakers not "every year we're going to have different paint colors and headlights and upholstery with a whole new car every 5 years" American/Japanese mindset.

It's all irrelevant though, the 911 should have died in the 80's with the introduction of the 944 and 928, stupid Porsche "fans" only wanting the 911. If only they could let the Cayman and Boxster reach their full potential to destroy the 911 performance wise, all it has left is it's relative utility (backseat like ours and a hood full of storage space) and the "prestige" oh well at least it means that Cayman's will be the bargain of the upcoming decade.

Yeah. It is a bit silly how hard Porsche is keeping the Cayman from stepping on the 911's toes. It's such a super platform. That's not to say 911's aren't incredible - in many ways they are the "pinnacle" of Porsche engineering (prestige-wise).

I'd do very bad things for a new Cayman S.

The second set of numbers is the same as the chassis codes for many other cars.

Like an M3 for example comes in 4 flavors, the e30, e36, e46 and e9x, and soon the F20 or whatever it's called.

It actually makes it less confusing because you don't have to go by year alone to try to figure out what car you're looking at or talking about.

1) these aren't model names, they are simply chassis codes. If you want to make it even more confusing, look at the 930 (80's 911 turbo), it's the only turbo 911 that got it's own chassis code, but the 944 turbo is actually a 951 chassis code. None of this is any different from the Skyline range R32, R33, etc), or the BMW chassis codes (3 series -> e30, e36, e43, etc). You will never see a single piece of marketing material selling a car by the chassis code, it'll always call it by the model (911, 325i, Skyline, etc). The first year 911's are called 911's because the chassis code on them is actually 911.

2) Carrera means race in German, it's not the actual name of the 911. A 993 Carrera 4S is still a 911, just a specific model. It's no different than a BRZ Sport-tech (Canadian terminology) in terms of nomenclature.

You confuse me, i understand that its the chassis names, but its the way owners themselves use the name that create the confusin, in a sense its a genius way to find out which spefic type of model you want, but to someone who wants to get into porches, the numbers lead to confusion. You know how it goes, numbers and people don't go.
