I'm not in the market, but I am happy I waited to get a 2017 model, which you could argue has some upgrades and bugs worked out from the prior 2013-2016 models.

There is about a 50 hp bump over the initial release. They also added in some strut braces in the engine bay that looks like they just bent some steel pieces laying around.

The problem with the A91 model people are running into is there is oil starvation issues. Car is burning oil and they can't figure out why so they're being recalled. I don't think the A90 model had this issue but people say it's because Toyota actually pulled the engine and inspected it on initial release. The A91 has upgraded internals by BMW is why there is a power bump.

But as I mentioned, I'd rather wait until they fix these issues and a special model. Maybe a TRD or Final Edition. Gives me time to save money to pay in cash as well.

So you're saying around 34,000 FRS/86 were written off due to defects?

Buying a later car doesn’t guarantee anything. Look at the fun the guys with a 2020 86 are having getting their stereo to work.

In fairness the HU "works" we are just trying to make it better. It really isn't an issue so much as just a design aspect that does not impress us.

I don’t know, having the installed amp bypassed does not meet the design intent of the system and is unacceptable IMO. When I found out how that was done I was pissed for you guys.

Oh I don't like it either but it is how they "designed" it. Was lazy and a cop out really.

Since the Supra received a 50 HP power bump in its 2nd year, and that represents a 15% increase in power, it's pretty safe to say that if you hold off on the twin for MY2 you will probably get the 262 HP upgraded 2.4 L NA. That's 101 HP/L exceeding the FA20's volumetric effciency. You will also enjoy water-tight taillights. How do I know this? Can't say but I have an in, that's how I know the writeoff numbers first MY

Well the car's HU had been designed (at least i think it has) to be replaced, hence its a standard double DIN size, and also fits with the customizability bullet of the Scion brand. And none of the HU's over the years have been impressive in any way. They've all just "worked" one way or another.

For 2020 they just needed to give the whiny tech bois some apple carplay and android auto because "its 2020 a car has to have these features!" so they probably just sourced the cheapest thing they could get that has it, that worked, and that didnt really need anything more than to plug and play and work. If it meant bypassing the amp cuz it wasnt designed for it...so be it.

The HU in these cars over the years have been kind of throwaway units anyways so theres really nothing lost. In all honesty they probably should have sourced a cheap pioneer unit like all the previous years instead of whatever (JVC? JBL? i dont remember what the brand is) they have now. I actually wonder why they never put and Entune based unit in these cars.......

Then again the first gen facelift only got a 5hp/5trq bump.....
But it did get the revised final drive ratio.

Did you drop your /s?

Toyota said from the beginning they would do yearly changes on the Supra à la GTR. Combine that with the fact that the Z4 had the 385hp motor in the first model year, and nobody was surprised that the Supra got it the year after. They bumped the boost from 12 to 14 PSI, that’s trivial. Earlier BMW turbo motors (N54) run 8PSI stock but they will run 15PSI all day long.

On what planet do you plan on getting 262hp from a 2.4l NA motor that passes global emissions? You’d need 14.5/1 compression, cause it’s not like the motor keeps making power from raising the redline. You can quote me, this will not happen with the BRZ/GR86.

The thing is that the other models may have been just adequate but they at least worked as a complete system. The 2020 one just tosses half that system away and is far below what I would deem "adequate".
The unit in my 2014 was a top line, high fidelity, audiophile dream system compared to the 2020. All I want is to be able to hear my phone calls and not have music that sounds like it is playing on a Fisher Price AM radio so I don't feel my standards are unrealistic.

Oh i hear you.
The audio in the 2020 HU was so much more tinnier than the Pioneer system in my Scion im (im assuming it sounds the same in the older 86/frs that uses the same HU)

I did find that a 320 kpbs quality mp3 helped alot vs the typical 128kpbs quality mp3. I was actually getting good bass vs little to no bass with my other mp3's. Of course i was playing electronic/trance music so i dunno if that just has inherently more bass due to the music genre (and i ripped them from CD's vs downloading the other MP3's off youtube).

Bluetooth phone worked..i did have to crank the sound and it did sound like the person was talking in the bathroom.
Carplay works...its a bit laggy but i barely use it anyways (i only tried it the one time just to test it)
I just accepted it because the audio was not a part of my buying decision. I just figured if the HU sucked i could just swap it out for a better one if and when i decide to do it.
