Car not going into ANY gear

Hello guys,

I’ve been trying to find a solution to my issue but i cant find anyone with the same issue as me.

I’ll drive my car fine for about 20 minutes, goes into every gear fine but after the 20 minute mark the car wont go into any gear. Aslong as the car is moving it’ll go into gear fine but when i fully stop it doesnt go into any gear.

So far ive:

- bled the clutch system
- adjusted my clutch pedal
- adjust the lockout bracket
- now ive opened the transmission thinking i bent a fork (nope)

The clutch i have on is the ACT HDSS stage 2 with a lighyweight flywheel. Brainstorm ideas with me! Thank you!

Sounds like an oil problem.

The 2 brands of transmission oil that ive tried in my car are

Motul & Millers

Motul is good but in colder climates its kinda crunchy going into gear

Millers is a little easier to get into gear in colder climates but is a pain to get in north America.

Both are good options.

ACT is also known for not letting go of the flywheel entirely so its hard to put into gear sometimes. I had an ACT clutch with the same issue and did steel braided clutch cable, high temp clutch fluid, adjusted the clutch many times to get more throw, tried different trans oils. In the end the only thing that helped was to change the clutch. Now im running the Exedy stage 2 clutch and its holding power pretty good and feels closer to stock.

Here is a video of when I had my ACT clutch and how it used to act. Turn volume up and you can hear that it slips the clutch even when fully pressed

My clutch troubles magically went away when I got rid of the ACT clutch and flywheel.

I was not impressed with the ACT clutch I had on my STi. Switched to Exedy which was much better. For your issue have you confirmed you are getting full travel at the slave cylinder? You could also try taking the slave off and manually depressing the clutch fork.

For me, the warmer the transmission gets, the better it shifts, so what you are describing is odd, so I tend to think it is a clutch problem and not a transmission problem. You seem to be locked out of gears because the clutch is not disengaging completely. Tell me this, at a stop in 1st gear, do you need to have your foot on the brake on a flat surface or the car will creep forward, even with the clutch pedal fully pressed in?

Maybe your clutch master or slave cylinder is shot?

It seems like the fork fractures more than bends, but I don't know if it flexes at all, which could describe the clutch drag, and how you found the clutch fork looking fine. I don't know if the flex happens once it is hot.

ACT clutch... doesn't go into any gear... does it when warm... I've heard about this a few times before.

Probably clutch drag. Very common problem with ACT clutches. Mine did the same thing. Went back to OE and never had a problem since:

If it's that common thing .. isn't it simply faulty design and product that should be recalled? It will just keep damaging longterm brand reputation instead of netting partial profit, if keeping selling so frequently failing one ..

Well the product might hold up to the performance that it suggests and In certain applications it might be your only choice for that price range. The next best thing that holds up like that is a dual plate clutch. So in a race environment where costs might play a big role and Street ability is not a huge concern it might be good enough but who knows what their view on the situation is. It culd be corporate looking at it and saying that enough people don't recall so their margin for profit is still high enough why change it.

Humfrz, you're a pretty cool guy. But I know you're also that guy who has to finish his morning paper and take a shit after the light turns green before you start driving.

Some of us like to add power to the car to make up for our tiny peckers, and the stock clutch is only good for 6" and bigger- when you've only got 2" or 3" to work with, you.... You... Ok go take a nap, I'm sorry

Well, and that's OK. However, I do not have to finish the paper after the light turns green, but, I do wait for the car beside me to go first, so as to block the red light runners and the people who are texting while crossing against the light. Then, I ease through the light just fast enough that I don't get rear ended by the ass hole tailgating me.

Having said that, yes, it is my nap time. It will be a good one since it's Sunday and I won't have the 4 ager kicking me in the back -

Had the same issues with my ACT SB7-HDSS. Even put in the Verus billet fork by a master tech and still experienced lockout issues after 5k miles.

FR-S ended up being a total loss and I started over with a '17 BRZ -- swore never to go near ACT products again.
