Hey what is this? Black Box, Rear tire compartment.

i am stripping out my trunk, and was curious about this black box, Look like a resonator or a big plug. the wires you see on top goes to the rear tail lights

I think you are correct about it being a resonator.. something to dampen vibrations and keep the structure from making noises..
I have something similar in a Honda accord..

Stick a finger in it and see if there are soft rubber flaps on the other side. If so, its to balance air pressure, like when you have the AC on full blast, the pressure has to go out somewhere. If you ever see a car with its rear bumper off you can see the flaps.

Tour right its a vent. You do think it will be a problem to block the airflow? I am putting sound deadening in my car

I wouldn't block the vents, but I have no I idea if doing so would be a bad thing.

They're to stop condensation in the car and give you ventilation.. all/most cars have them.. not sure if it's a regulatory thing or something that is needed for type approval.

I think it also provides an outlet for the air pressure increase when you close your trunk. Makes it so you don't have to slam it against the escaping air.

Sorry for reviving this old thread but I’ve finally discovered where this plastic buzzing sound is coming from. It’s from this black piece. I put my fingers in and there’s like a plastic sheet or flap that’s buzzing around.
Any idea how I can remove this plastic or stop this buzzing sound that’s annoying me?
Thanks in advance

It buzzed loudest during cold start and during low rpms. I ripped the flaps despite a buddy telling me not to. I’m going to cover it up with duct tape.
