They have existed, just maybe not in the US. In Europe and Australia you used to be able to get the M140i, a practical RWD hot hatch with the B58 I6. Ripper cars, and sadly the new FWD biased 1 series are not a patch on the discontinued RWD ones.

It’s a shame but there’s just no great market appeal for them. After the 1st Gen 1 series was released in 2008, surveys showed that as much as 80% of 1 series owners thought their cars were FWD. https://www.bmwblog.com/2010/03/24/b...think-its-fwd/ It’s a shame because the E8X 135i was a great car. I almost picked one up to replace my BRZ, but it wasn’t light enough to feel much different from my 335i. |

The Q50 community isn't as big as ours because its a soccer mom car but the path to go from 300HP to 500HP is VERY deterministic and reliable for VR30DDTT. 5K-6K for Tune + Intake + bigger Heat exchanger + exhaust + E85. Then you can beat out a GTR or 438 granny shifting in auto by 5 car lengths with your stock wheels, all while being able to hear a pin drop in the cabin. If you have big power aspirations + power mods, go with the Z. The 86 platform is best enjoyed in its stock powertrain especially with a new FA24 engine with whoknowswhat crickets that lurk underneath. |

My 86, my old Scion im, and my X1 all feel the same under normal driving conditions. The advantages and disadvantages for either drive wheel dont manifest itself in any way. Press the gas or downshift, and you get a "shove" in the back of your seat. Thats the only real thing felt. You start to feel the differences once the conditions present itself (say winter, hard driving, track driving) So yeah the general public isnt going to notice these things unless they're told. And manufacturers follow the money so if they can save a few bucks by making a FWD BMW feel similar to a RWD BMW, they'll do it. They're not going to care about the brand's "prestige" to some degree. (BMW makes FWD cars now, and they even have small people movers...2 series tourer anyone?....things loyalists would never fathom existing under the BMW badge) |

It developed what sounded like rod knock at high rpm @32k miles, confirmed by my mechanic, so I drove it down the street and traded it in on a used '18 Mazda 3. Car was a maintenance nightmare. In that short amount of time I had to change the belt, tensioner, plugs, OFHG, valve cover gasket, new battery, and a few other things. It's what keeps me very leery of buying a Supra. |

New BRZ vs Z
Sounds about right. A Bimmer from that era is rough if you don’t do a significant amount of work yourself or have a BMW specialist that has a reasonable labor rate. If I didn’t have my local guy I’d think twice about another one.

Got to do your own work. Had a friend who owned a normal old 3 series and refused to let me show him how to do brakes and rotors. I priced about 400 with bmw parts. He’s said nah I will bring it to the dealer. Well 1200 later he learned his lesson.

I'm not reading through this whole thread but I think the Z is in a good spot and a great option out there. Great place between the Supra and above the BRZ/GR86
I also want to add that if you plan on boosting your BRZ or 86, you're basically gonna be spending close to another 10K anyways. The BRZ/GR86 is starting at 30K Nissan Z starts at 40K The Supra start at 50K |

Looks like the Z gets no heated seats without spending the next tier. Nissan does that crap. It is so 1991 that company.
Veloster vanilla had heated seats and nice interiors. Veloster N is +30K dollars and has scratchy cloth and no heated seats. These companies are out of touch with who buys their crap and what makes them get passed on. Most minor additions to a model will make someone buy it and cost near nothing for a company. Mini, Subaru, Mazda get it, nissan, hyundai never seem to. Sometimes Honda also is kind of dumb as well. Z has a lot of things missing on it so i have read in the first form of it. |
