C8 Chevy Corvette coupe production resumes May 26, convertible on July 20

Quote:
Thousands more 2020s to be built as 2021 changeover pushed back to November 2

Recent rumors surrounding the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette have wondered whether GM will build more units of the current model year when the Bowling Green Assembly Plant returns to work, or switch to the 2021 model year and leave 2020 as one of the rarest Corvette versions ever produced. The automaker put the rumors to bed by telling Autoblog it "will continue to build 2020 Corvette Stingrays when the plant resumes production."

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear opened the state for business on May 11, and GM pledged to reopen the BGAP on May 26. At that point, there will be a slow ramp-up to bring 2020 Corvette coupe production back to full speed. A post on Corvette Forum got the Internet's sleuthing machinery working overtime on the matter of the model year changeover and Corvette convertible production, Corvette Blogger getting the relevant numbers.

GM built close to 2,700 units of the 2020 Corvette hardtop before the plant closed down on March 20, far fewer than the year's allocation — a number that had already been cut by 20% due to last year's UAW strike and supplier issues. The automaker closed order books for the 2020 car in March, and order books for the 2021 coupe were supposed to open this month, with production for next year's model slated to commence September 1. Corvette Forum poster Corvette Ed and Corvette Blogger say the new date for the switchover is November 2. That gives Bowling Green five months to fulfill as many 2020 orders as possible before converting some buyers' orders to cars in the 2021 model year.

Corvette Ed said GM would begin building 2020MY convertibles on Tuesday, July 13. Corvette Blogger updated that info to say it got confirmation Corvette convertible production resumes one week later, on July 20.

Getting everything going will still be constrained by safety and supplier issues. The GM plant in Indiana that makes the Corvette chassis continued to operate through the coronavirus shutdown, but the Tonawanda Engine Plant in Buffalo, N.Y., that makes the 6.2-liter LT2 V8 only reopened three days ago. Mexico, where some Corvette components are produced, is being prodded by U.S. automakers to move its manufacturing restart date from June 1 to "right now."

GM got 2,700 cars completed in the six weeks from February 10 to March 20 on a light shift schedule. Five months of hardtop and three months of convertible production will get many thousands more cars made, but even so, the 2020 Corvette will be more exclusive than anyone intended or wanted.

On a different note, there are still hundreds of 2019s available

We picked up a new left over 2019 Silverado 4x4 for the wife a couple weeks back as her current 2013 Silverado has 170K on the clock. Got 30% off MSRP which is a pretty good deal. I would suspect you could get a Vette in that range as well. Lot of car for the money.

I tried very hard to watch, but lasted only 4 minutes (a record for me). During that 4 minutes I believe the longest continuing segment without a splice was about 10 seconds.

He reminds me of my Uncle who when drunk knew everything and wanted to share that knowledge with you through happy shouting and arm waving.

Hmmm, maybe I should check to see if he wants to get into the Youtube business.....

The Secrets of the Mid-Engined 2020 C8 Corvette Development Mules

Quote:
The first mule was an Australian ute with a Porsche PDK automatic transmission.

What once seemed like a pipe dream is now a reality, as the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette marks the decades-old sports car model's move from a front- to a mid-engine layout. Developing the eighth-generation Corvette was a time-consuming affair that required more than simply swapping the engine from one end of the car to the other, though, and General Motors spent more than half a decade fine-tuning the dynamics of the C8.

Of course, GM couldn't let the public know what it was up to, so the company tested the mid-engine platform under the bodywork of a Holden Maloo pickup truck. Take one look at this cobbled together development mule, though, and it's obvious this is no ordinary Maloo. With its wide fender flares, big wing, and Corvette-sourced windshield and A-pillars, this hacked-up Holden fooled few into believing it was anything but an early development vehicle for a forthcoming mid-engined sports car.

Given the nickname "Blackjack" by GM employees, the mid-engined Maloo was hand-built in 2014 at GM's Warren Technical Center in Michigan and served as the first C8 mule. Reflecting its Corvette ambitions, Blackjack sports an interior that shares its major hardware with that of the C7 Corvette. Likewise, Blackjack shares its V-8 engine with the seventh-generation Corvette, although it uses a Porsche-sourced dual-clutch automatic transmission (or PDK in Porsche-speak).

Naturally, development vehicles wearing production-style bodywork—under heavy camouflage, of course—supplemented Blackjack as development continued on the new Corvette. While the basic shape of the C8 began to come into focus with these cars, the model's styling details remained under wraps as engineers went about sorting out the mid-engined monster's dynamics. What started with approximately 11 handbuilt mules in 2016, soon multiplied into nearly 100 development vehicles as the decade wore on. The latter batch of mules wore near-production design details and interiors, albeit under camouflage.

With the 2020 Corvette now in production, the car's early development mules need no longer toil about in secrecy. In fact, GM brought a handful of the vehicles out from hiding during a recent press event for the new Corvette, which gave us the opportunity to see the lengths GM went to engineer the latest iteration of its infamous sports car.

Arguably, all of the company's work paid off, as the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette impressed us enough to earn our 2020 Car of the Year award. Like its forebears, the latest Corvette is a performance bargain. Thank its $59,995 starting price and the almost 500 horses produced from its 6.2-liter V-8 engine, which helps the latest Corvette sprint 60 mph in 2.8 seconds. There's no need to pinch yourself because the mid-engined Corvette is as real as the mid-engined Maloo that kicked the C8's development into high gear.

Engineering Explained & the Chevy C8

The thing I like most about this clip is not so much the car (I admire the car, don't want) but the explanation of the compromises. The fact that certain goals have a cost.
Because, I've said it a gazillion times, everything's a compromise.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I wrote "it is easy to say the manufacturer can/should just do XXXX but the reality is very different" on a car forum.

The Michelin PS4 A/S is probably like magic glue tires given how good the 3+ A/S is. With all seasons like this, I don't really see the point of buying a max performance summer tire that has barely any more dry grip, less wet grip, and less tread life.

From Tirerack BMW F30 tests (Goodyear is also an all season):

-------------------------------Wet g/dry g/dry braking/wet braking
Michelin Pilot Sport AS 3+: 0.80__0.92__80.9ft____101.3ft
Goodyear Eagle Exhilarate: 0.84__0.94__85.7ft____97.4ft
Michelin Pilot Sport 4S:-----0.77__0.97__78.4ft____117.9ft
Pirelli P Zero PZ4:-----------0.83__0.96__80.0ft___ 121.1ft
