Weird. Sounds like Scion and Subaru use different washers Mine was a shiny aluminum crush washer.

They pulled the subaru crush washer bin at cobb we could not believe it asked for a crush washer yet mine was a flat black washer. We just ended up re-using it, checked for leaks under load, and all was good to go. No spots on the garage floor whatsoever. This vehicle is set up perfectly for the DIY oil change. Hopefully local toyota dealers get the proper washer in stock soon so I can stock up on a few more parts.

Yes! I didn't even have my oil cap off and my catch pan was gaining oil faster than draining!

I had the same problem, oil just flew out of the damn engine. I had the oil cap off though, next time I'll leave the whole thing corked up so hopefully it wont drain out like speed racer and dirty up my garage floor next time. D:

Got an email from my Subaru dealer asking me to come in at 3k miles for my first one./shrug

Oil change was easy, about 30m. My oil filter was on -really- tight though so I had to punch a small screwdriver into it to get it to turn as my strap wrench wouldn't fit in the space where the oil filter sits. Hopefully my new Subaru filter which I tightened will come of easier next time around.

Subaru suggests 3000m for the First oil change btw.
I thought I read that somewhere else, but the Subaru Service Shop Manual page 75, says the first oil change is at 7,500.

So what are you guys doing to get clearance under your cars to get to the drain plug? I realized I couldn't get my car up ramps today while attempting an oil change....now I'm wondering if I can even get my cheapo floor jack under the front bumper in the proper position while I try to use jack stands.

Edit: Considering making some DIY ramps out of 2x10's but I'd like to avoid this (mostly has to do with the issue of having nowhere to put them).

Went to my toyota dealer today since I don't have a Scion dealer close. I tried to get a filter and crush washer...turns out she couldn't get either because the warehouse didn't have them yet. Hope they hurry up!

When I bought my FRS they put an oil change sticker on the window indicating an oil change at 5,000 miles. Sounds reasonable for me as I will only put 5,000 miles a year on it.

LOL@the fast drain stories. Welcome to the world of Subaru Oil Changes. Subaru engines drain oil like a fire hose. The BRZ/FR-S have 16mm drain plugs. My Imprezas have 20mm drain plugs. My drain pan can just *barely* keep up when I drain my STI or WRX.

Then there was the one time I left the plug in my drain pan.....

The Fumoto valves are great, not only for the convenience, but to slow the drain of oil too. I'm looking forward to the oil changes in my BRZ. They are going to be so easy! No panels to remove, no messy oil filters or drain plugs.

16mm? You sure its not 14mm, have you changed your oil yet?

It was found that the BRZ uses the same drain plug as the Outback and new Imprezas. Those are 16mmx1.5 threads.

Are you talking about the hex head on the plug? I don't know what the new one is, but it's likely smaller than the thread size. The old, larger drain plug was a 20mmx1.5 thread with a 17mm head.

Im talking about the size of the tool used to remove the drain plug... and its 14mm; thats why I was thrown off by the extra 2mm.

Fumoto valves will be on every vehicle I buy, just soooo many advantages.
