The difference in the trunk floor height of the Corolla HB vs GRC is a lot smaller than one would think. Even the seats lay down completely flat in both.
Corolla HB: GRC:

Maybe it just looks extra bad given how deep the GTI's hatch is.
(I'm well aware there's no rear diff eating up space in a GTI, but it does have a spare down there...so does a Golf R ) Quote:

No you’re right, the depth of the GTI is nice and you’d be sacrificing a chunk of vertical space. Another thing is that the trunk area of the GTI is more squared whereas Corolla HB and GRC it is diagonal, so if you have a taller box you actually have to push it into the car more.
Before my Corolla HB I had an 18 GTI. I was road cycling heavily and chose the GTI over the Corolla HB because of the trunk space.

Looks like an inch to an inch and a half considering the D ring tie-down on the side has "sunk" down (unless they used a completely different ring).

^^Just gonna be super annoying to lack the ability to put a medium sized cooler in the trunk.

The interior packaging of the TNGA platform seems to be one of its major weak spots. Every car that uses a variant of this platform (Either Toyota or Lexus), always seems to have less interior room than its predecessor and competition.
And its not helped by the more swoopy design elements that Toyota has been employing (lowered roofline = less headroom, more aerodynamic/sportier design elements = takes away cargo space). One of the knocks that the Corolla hatch had when it first came out was that it was less roomy and smaller cargo space than the Auris/Scion iM/Corolla iM it was meant to replace. the Lexus UX has space complaints and even the new Prius is smaller inside than its predecessor (although i think that has more to do with the design which is far more low/wedge than the oddball looking Prius before it) It does make me wonder what the hell Toyota has been doing with their interior space....my BMW X1 is pretty damn roomy inside and out and it competes with the UX, which annihilates it in space. The NX is more comparable spacewise and thats a size class up. |

My medium size one (24 can size) fits under the cover in the GTI's hatch with less than a inch to spare. In a Corolla HB, I'm guessing it's too tall and also too deep (prob hits the tailgate). I mean I will just buy one that works (soft?) but a medium sized cooler isn't exactly large. I'll test fit it the next time I see the Core owner around here, lol

The best point made in the entire video is that these cars lose their attractiveness because of the price. I'm just not going to pay that much for a "hot hatch". They aren't supposed to be exclusive, that isn't what they are about.

That is the biggest factor for me. At the end of the year I'll be in the market. And although I think both of those cars are awesome, their price tags and dealer mark ups make them very unattractive. Kinda like a hot chick who is a total bitch. Makes them look fuck ugly. Which is why I'm growing fond of the nerdy less attractive girl who has a great personality (WRX).

unless you take a cooler with you all the time...take the tailgate cover off if you're just going for a weekend trip, might give you the little bit of room you need.
not that i'm in the market for this car but it is a bit of a bummer toyota doesnt quite have the interior space the mk7 does |
