Here SSM III/IV Manual. See pages from 128 to 147. Procedure is well described. About metal tag code, that code is the mech code to build only that blade.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1B9-...ew?usp=sharing

you need ID key released to Subaru Dealer thru online access to SoA. In some other countries many times Subaru paste the label on circuit board of key but I know that in Europe and US is illegal to show (to protect the owner about missing key elsewhere).

The cost of new key is almost expensive, in Europe the cost for remote is 140$ and the programming about 250$, so the total per remote and blade is quite around 450/500$.

I know well the procedure as I wished to substitute the old remote key with the new one '18, more stylish....I left.

Yup and since I lost both keys. Similar to the op. We have to send out our biu and one other module to Subaru of America, wait for it to come back to the dealer. And then the system wakes up for new keys to be programmed.. California quoted me $750 for al other labor itself. $300-500 for new keys on top of that.

Talked to my lock smith today. He said he tried looking for my biu but couldn’t find it. So that’s why he suggested to replace my ecus in general to try to sync to the car. But I realized that still wouldn’t allow him to reprogram my car unless he somehow wiped my biu and the other required module to let him program new keys. Now I leave the rest with Subaru.

All this key crap is criminal. You can buy an iPhone for the cost of a key. A key that costs probably 20c to build if not less.

yes....it's true. Don't forget that you can require, in all US, sometimes to Locksmith the pairing or new key. In Europe there's no liberalization of this market. Only official dealers do.

Newer model subarus as of right now I believe can't even be programmed by even the best auto lock smiths as of right now. They can if you have one that is already existing, but they won't be able to program any unless they're somehow able to wipe your modules allowing them to program new keys from scratch to the blanked modules. Older cars are great when it comes to locksmith.. tried over 9 auto locksmiths in my area none of them can do it. Might be the same for all other 86 models too.

If nothing else this will serve as a lesson to others to not wait until you’ve lost your last key fob to do something about it... two is one and one is none, make a copy while you still have one fob left and save a lot of future grief and expense.

Which is the boat I am in. I am down to my last one so I got two online for $60 and had the blades cut for $4 and was able to pair the remotes with Techstream but the pairing process for the transponder is failing. I am thinking the chips are blank on the keys I got. There is a device called a Magic Wand that will clone transponders. It’s $60. If it works it’s well worth the money. So in the end I would have 120 invested for two keys which is way cheaper than even a single key through the dealer. I am actually using the remote from the after market key because it gets better range than the OEM, even with the same battery.
