I'd give it a test drive. Maybe they'll put speakers in the back that will make vroom vroom sounds.

Yes, build one up like this MR-S only with BRZ/GT-86 parts.

Good lord, this car looks terrible as a convertible!

Admittedly,I hate convertibles to begin with, but just looking at what they did with it,it's easy to tell that this car was never meant to be one.

Yuck. Never liked convertibles, that’s why I never considered a Miata or S2000. The new Miata with the retractable top is the first I would entertain, but still, seems like extra weight for nothing...

To me that is the wrong segment. The MR2 should be small, light, and affordable. Ideally it could sit right in between the 86 and the Supra.

But I remember they were trying to see if they can combine some kind of hybrid or other tech different to make it more modern sports car.
If it doesn’t add much weight, great. But if it is going to add 100+kg, no thanks. The appeal of an MR2 is a light and nimble ‘Elise’ like MR sports car, not a heavy but powerful supercar.

Not sure where the project is atm. I feel like it didn't work out, so they put that on hold again.
I keep saying, they should make something Elise sized and light, use one of their own 4 pot engines (just like the Elise), keep it simple and relatively affordable. Make it a targa top/removable roof, and I reckon it would be an instant hit as it offers something you can’t get anywhere but Lotus (for a much higher price).

Not a fan of convertibles either, but I don’t mind a targa top, which can still provide a fairly rigid coupe like experience.

The RF is cool but yeah, the complex folding roof mechanism adds extra weight and takes up storage space that a dedicated coupe could avoid. One of the eternal mysteries is why Mazda don’t pick the low hanging fruit and capitalise on their existing MX-5 by offering a fixed coupe version. The development cost would be minimal... they could literally use the existing RF shape, but just make it a permanent hardtop (I’d suggest an aluminium roof with a carbon fibre optional one) and save some weight. It would only expand the customer base. Not sure why they don’t...

I'd be all about a hardtop Miata. They could probably even save a little on costs too. I love a targa top, TTops, and sunroofs, but just can’t deal with a ragtop. I can’t think of any car that looks good as a convertible.
