>>> Circuit Motorsports > Scion FR-S + E85 + HKS Header + EcuTek Tune!

We recently had the opportunity to tune an FR-S running E85 with an HKS EL Header.

Setup:

Stock airbox w/drop-in filter + silicone intake tube
HKS Equal Length Header
HKS Front Pipe
3” Catback

Tuned on a Mustang Dyno:

The FR-S ran silky smooth, pulling hard and even all the way through the rev range. Torque dip is completely gone with this header plus a tune! Peak numbers were 205whp/170wtq on a Mustang Dyno. Drivability was also excellent! We are very impressed with this combo!

Here is a comparison of E85 vs. 93 pump gas.

And a few pics of the hardware:

Wow what a nice looking exhaust, and great numbers on a mustang dyno. Were those numbers scaled to 'dynojet' as we've been seeing on some other vendor comparisons? If not, do you have a general idea of scaling factor for your Mustang dyno (from experience)?

Also if you guys get a chance, video please!

I have a video I took on my phone I can post up tonight for you

Mustang was run with standard mustang dyno calibration, no special calibrations were applied. Mustang dynos typically read approximately 10% lower than a dynojet dyno.

That sounds about right - wow that's hovering around 225 'dynojet' whp (many people around here quote dynojet numbers, so I just use those for comparison). Big top end, very nice - what's the pricing on that whole exhaust setup?

Based on the numbers, i would say your mustang read like a dynojet. Also, from an earlier thread:

I assume the 93 numbers were without a tune? Even with 100% stock exhaust peak power should be latter than 6250 on 93 pumpgas with a tune.

@mad_sb,

We'd really appreciate it if you researched a little more before trying to discredit someone

From that same earlier thread:

It was verified that this mustang dynamometer was a straight up mustang with no special calibrations.
We are using a different mustang dyno at a different shop, we have been for the last couple tunes. We've verified no special calibrations are being used on this dyno. This is a standard Mustang.

I disagree with you about these numbers being dynojet numbers. Bob @Drift-Office was able to get close to 200whp on a dynojet dyno with an HKS EL header setup and 92-octane fuel. Thread here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1067502

It's not a stretch to imagine at least a 10% increase in whp by using E85 fuel over the 92-octane pump gas, which would put the numbers in the 215 - 220whp range easily on a dynojet dyno.

I'm not trying to discredit anyone I am just speaking from my own dyno time with my own car as well as many many hours tuning on an uncorrected dynodynamics in the past. If I didn't read correctly or understand what dyno you were using then i apologize.

The first DJ i baselined my car on it made just over 170 stock on 93 octane with the IAM at 1.0, the next one and the one i used for tuning read a good bit lower than that, fully tuned with equal length 4-1 fa20 club header (with cat), nameless catted front pipe, speedfactory single exit and E80 it made 193 in 4th... I'm sure with another hour or so on the dyno i could have found a few more hp. Also with no cats I'm sure it would have been worth a few more as well.. but 25 or 30.. nope. With no cats and another hour on the dyno I'm sure i would have been at or just over 200 whp in 4th. Hence my line of thinking that the mustang you used reads similar to the dynojet i used for tuning my car.

I'm quite familiar with the gains of E85 over pump, it's why i run E85 all the time now. What I'm not familiar with is a 93 octane tune that makes peak power at 6250. Perhaps the RPM pickup is off on that dyno, not sure, admittedly i have never used a mustang dyno. Had the power continued to climb on your 93 run the way i would expect it too, the gains you saw with E85 would look much more in line with the 15ish whp I would expect.

Quick video I just threw together, not great quality but it'll give you an idea of the runs and how the car sounded.

Last week Circuit Motorsports installed an HKS EL header and front pipe as well as 93 and E85 tunes. The results were transformational for my car this weekend at the track. I was really impressed with the amount of time committed to dial each of these tunes in. A couple hours street tuning before several hours of dyno tuning for EACH map. About 12 hours involved over 2 days. Bob is an absolute whiz at extracting optimum power while maintaining safety and drivability. This was critical for me as the car was loaded on the trailer 2 days after they finished and then pushed to the limit for 2 days at Roebling Road. Now for the results:

E85 tune on Mustang dyno made 205/170

Acceleration on the straightaway according to my Aim Solo:
Pre tune (August dry track) 105 to 120 gain 15mph
E85 tune (december damp track) 101 to 129 gain 28mph

Difference was a gain of 13 mph in just the front straight. The power is evident everywhere on the track and in damp conditions with minimal traction required careful throttle input! Still managed a 123.87 despite running 8/10 in the corners.
