I think I got it. I'll check when I get out of work before I leave. I think it should be cool by then too.

For a hot kind of smell wouldnt you also want to be checking EGT's and oil temp/psi?

After taking a look at the pictures you posted, I do believe this is the cause of the smell. I took some pictures of mine so you guys could see exactly what it looks like....definitely wasn't clean looking like the picture you posted.

If this does indeed look like the problem then I have a couple of questions.
  1. Is it something that needs to be fixed immediately or can it wait a week or so?
  2. This is covered under warranty right? If so, should I bother flashing back to stock for this?

It's covered by warranty and it can wait a week. I would always flash to stock before taking my car into the dealer. Just make sure you push the car (I.e. Put it under some hard loads) before going into the dealer. That way it's easier for them to spot the leak. My dealer was a bit of an idiot in regards to this even after I told them where exactly the leak was.

Edit: also mine was cleaned really recently.

How long have you had your car or more specifically, how many miles are on it? I've spoken to my service dept about this, but this was some time ago and I no longer notice that "non magical" smell.

My car has 19000 miles and it was still making this smell due to the leak. If you don't push your car hard it won't leak though. Guess I'm just mean to my car.

I ruined my '98 S14 "being mean" to it! I will never do that again. I am, however a very serious driver. If I can't "drive it like I stole it" (occasionally) , then there's no point in having it!

It's not a huge rush, but definitely get it checked out. Yes, it's covered under warranty.

I've noticed that thread during my recent research, lots of good info. After reading a lot of other people's experiences trying to fix this it made me scared to go to the dealer.

I saw that Raceseng (or however you spell it) sells an aftermarket cam plate cover that seems to work very well. It makes me wonder if I should just fix this thing myself and stay away from dealer "fixes".

I'm watching mine and if it ever starts leaking I'm going to replace it with the Raceseng plate. I'm trying to do most of the maintenance and small things on the car myself and only take it to the dealer for any huge maintenance/warranty work.
