That's because Oregon is run by Llamas. Jk. I wish I could do that.

Correct. No permanent structures can be built unless they are within 50ft of rear and front, 25 ft left and right, from the property line. Where is my house? 50 ft from the property line F/R...25ft R/L.

Trust me, a wood deck is not permanent.

I forget the verbiage we had to use on our letter. But it was something about us not being able to take the most advantage of our zone and that it was sort of unfair. I think the tool shed the previous owner installed also had to get a permit because it is on our property map, even if the thing is made entirely out of wood, which is now coming apart. Not even secured to the ground, it is on wood pallets. No concrete anywhere near the base.

In San Jose, most people did most work illegally without permits. Only time you bothered with permits is when you were adding square footage. You were suppose to get a permit to change your waterheater. You just go on line and pay with your credit card. No inspections or anything, just pay the fee. Who is going to do that?

Some cities in the bay area are so bad with permitting and stuff that some of my contractor friends won't take jobs in those cities. And many cities have guys driving around looking for work trucks so they can bust people doing work without permits.

I'm still waiting to hear back from the city for my gutter-cleaning permit.

Basically in my area, if you are not adding square footage and you are the homeowner, you can do most things without a permit. Roof's, siding, porches, plumbing ect. all have been no problem. We have had building inspectors drive by while I was fixing the foundation on the house I did last year and just wave. If you are a hired contractor then they want to see a permit but not on everything, roofs are free game. The town my house is in is a little pickier and they want you to file some things with them, like if you were to add a freestanding shed to your backyard, but it is free to file and they will inspect that it meets code and that is it. No fee for inspection.

If it was on pier blocks and not attached to the house is it considered permanent?

I have seen some of the "houses" in your area. You can tell no permit is required!

I have done a pile of things and never filed for a permit even though supposed to. It is cheaper and easier to plead ignorance and pay any fines after the fact if by some one in a million chance they found out. The good news is that there ain't nobody in my neighbourhood that would say shit about nothin to the city.

lol it looks a lot different now. People have rebuilt a lot of new houses since the fires. But yeah, this area is pretty well "Bubba'd." A common tactic is to build a 200sqft porch, then a year or two later enclose it, then a while later finish the inside and make it part of the house.

I doubt it is much better than last October!
A lot of the really poor looking places were along the sides of the highway.
Pretty sure some had HOAs that required you to have a minimum of one collapsing building and 4 rusty old cars in the yard.
Doubt Ultra saw most of them since as soon as I said "Oh look at that" he would actually look and start to turn in that direction. We almost died many times because I could not contain the "Oh look at that" comments.
