I never really noticed much of a torque dip. In fact I regularly pass people on the freeway in the middle of that torque dip. Honestly the throttle response is so fast it doesn't really matter much.

Yep!
We worked it out from the dyno graphs once and the "dip" lasts around a tenth of a second. Suck if trying to set a world drag race record but no real world effect on the streets or highway. Turbo lag can last far longer under heavy acceleration.

You'd never see the torque dip in this scenario with most motor / gear setups.

Yep. If your are trying to set a world drag race record with a stock Twin you are in for a world of disappointment anyway.

Nothing said you had to be going for the fastest time. There are all kinds of records.

Car manufacturers use the smallest turbo possible to minimize spool time and give it a nice punchy low to mid torque so the average consumer is like "OH MY CAR IS FASTTTTTT" When in reality it is not.

The pull all the way to redline is one of my favorite thing about my FRS. It is so much more exciting than a mid range torque shove.
Haha yep agreed, it's just the result of the small OEM turbo. I'll give credit to VW though. For the way the average person drives, the TSI engine is tuned well with peak torque coming below 2000 RPM.

Occasionally when I'm giving someone a ride in the GTI, they'll mention the car feels surprisingly quick (even though I'm just driving normally through traffic below 4000 RPM). For the regular driver who will never redline an engine, the TSI has a very broad usable torque curve.

The issue is that if you get used revving your engine and then go back to the TSI engine, then you see the difference.

It works both ways. Sometimes after a week of driving the GTI, I get into the FR-S and wonder where the power went.

Then I remember I shouldn't have upshifted so early and there was another few thousand RPM to go. The two engines have very different characteristics - I just try to enjoy them for what they are.

Delicious 91/93 tune, it's nice but you don't feel the rush near top anymore... I know it's faster and it has more torque all around and more hp...but I like how stock shoots you a tiny bit forward with lightest touch on the gas paddle pass 6.5k...

after tune it's just very stable climb & the throttle response is more dull on top.

My personal preference to handle unexpected torque dip is nachos, though its also good on wraps.

In general a smoother throttle response is better and faster. No reason to unbalance the car or to loose grip, unless you intend to do so ...

I never knew the car had a "torque dip" until I joined the forum. Every engine is different. Before variable cam timing, we figured out where the engines "power band" was. Choosing a cam while Building an engine was always a compromise. Did you want low end, or high end? Couldn't have both.
