Transmission swap or gear set?

So I'm doing a relatively high power FA20 build, and am caught up in the transmission. I was initially planning on doing a V160 swap, but the cost and lack of production for this transmission bothers me. One of the companies I was looking at for the V160 suggested I do a gear set instead, so there wouldn't have to be any modification to the tunnel.

I would like to hear from people who have done a gear set in their 86. How much power are you making, is the drive quality similar to stockish, and who did you go through?

Thank you

@wrxgoose haven't seen your username in a minute. Good to see you back.

I have read about Jack's transmissions improved gearset that some users here are running. I think user @Drakiv has one, see his build.

Someone here was developing dog gears for two gears. I can’t remember who. Another had a full set for like $6k. The other options that are popular are the R154 and the CD009. It depends on your power goals/needs.

Yeah, I've been gone for a while. Sold the condo, so I have a bit of disposable income to work on the car. New wheels/ tires already, brakes and suspension. Transmission and rear end are next, which is why I'm trying to figure out what way I should go.

Spencer fabrication was developing a sequential dog box as well but went out of business before they finished

The seq dogs are like $20k, or close to it. I don't know if he has deep pockets.

I feel like a CD009 should handle plenty of power and would be the cheapest route.

Ask @FRS Justin ... The guy has a 700+whp FRS, so he might know what will hold power.

Here is his build thread:

I don't know if he ever had these for purchase:

Verus had this beta, but I don't know where they are at now with the product:

Irace86.2.0: IIRC Holinger is more of expensive end of seq gearbox makers. Shouldn't something like Samsonas or MFactory have cheaper ones?

One-off boxes are usually not cheap, but yea, there are cheaper ones. I think the difference might be volume or just general specs/use of materials.

I'd expect for holinger to be more finese, maybe less nvh, for maybe even DD use, if i judge by that video on holinger's seq box ft86sf product page. Possibly branding also may play some role in pricing policies. And worth checking, if those $20K include or not shipping & importing costs, which may add up high for something as big and heavy shipped from down under.

Samsonas also is of custom ratios. Probably completely ok durability/strength wise (as often is used in motorsports too), but imho may fare a bit worse where nvh matter. Though then again this is just wild guess. Also price of ~$10K(£7850) here is without shipping/importing/VAT costs.
