If I am winding out a gear I still always use all gears to get to 6th.

For example say I use second to get up to 55. I still go 3 - 4 - 5 - 6. Doing that you can literally just clutch change gears with no throttle and if you do it at the proper cadence it will be super smooth. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

guys... granny shifting not double clutching like you should.. in all seriousness, skip shifting without double clutching like PORSCHE described above will put unnecessary wear on the synchros. This was a common problem on the s2000s. Seeing as how the BRZ has a very similar gearbox to the s2k, don't be surprised to experience 5th and 6th gear grinding due to skip shifting.

My transmission has been replaced and I'm a lot nicer to the synchros now. Thanks!

I find that it is difficult to get into 5th and 6th regardless of the operating temperature.

Lots of posts about gear grinding on here recently.

When you folks say you experience grinding, do you hear it or do you feel it? Which one is worse?

Porsche explained it quite well.

There is nothing wrong with skip shifting. Like other have said, rowing through all the gears does nothing but gradually slow down the engine and transmission, using the clutch, the engine, and synchros on gears 4 & 5.

The relatively short shifting means slamming from 3-->6 the synchro has to work extremely hard to slow down the input shaft. For all we know, you might be one of those guys that doesn't fully depress the clutch between gears either, leaving a bit of power on the input shaft further exacerbating the situation.

Your best bet is to either take a lot of time between shift, slowly engaging to give the synchro some extra time, or double clutching as above, and shifting when you see that the engine is a couple hundred RPM above the highway cruising speed, somewhere around 3000rpm for highway cruising.

In this day and age, it should never be required. But apparently, for those with certain condition within their transmissions (synchro wear, fluid viscosity) and driving styles, high RPM with block shifting style, it may quite literally be necessary to double clutch to avoid grinding gears.

I pretty regularly accelerate quickly in first and second up to speed in traffic, then quickly shift 3-4-5-6...it takes no real effort and I can't understand why you'd want to skip shift.

once at operating temps, i shift 1-2 gently, but the rest of the gears are all hard shifts. Hopefully the tranny is as durable as the STi 6 speed.

I skip gears all the time, once I get my fill of butt dyno effect, I skip a gear to bring the noise and thus RPM to a nice cruse range. Although these little shits of an engine that is still higher than most it so seems.

Almost everyone in this thread is talking about grinding when going into 6th gear, not 4th. Except for the one guy who has also had his transmission replaced.

If you are on your third transmission and it's grinding in 4th again either you are one unlucky guy, there's a rash of bad transmissions (seems unlikely, haven't seen a thread on a 4th gear grinding issue), or - and I mean no offense here - something in your driving habits is causing the problem.
