Speaking of bad dog owners, we regularly come up to dogs and owners that think it is ok to have their dogs off leash. They think their dog will just obey being unleashed in their yards, then they come running at us and our dogs as we walk by on the street. Last time it happened was funny. This big (bigger than Princess) pit/cattle dog mix came running at us. The owners were screaming, and it even had a shock collar that did no good, it kept coming. When it got close, Princess lunged and put it down by the neck. Princess really missed her calling. She should be a police dog. It was really impressive.
The amount of people who don't leash their dogs is incredible. Someone at my complex always has theirs off leash against the rules. That dog on more than one occasion has basically ambushed other dogs and almost gotten into fights.

At the park there are always dogs off leash against the rules and many times they'll run over to us and the owner either isn't paying attention or keeps trying to recall them unsuccessfully.

If your dog doesn't respond immediately on the first or second try it should not be off leash. I already had one dog attack Haru once like that with the owner nowhere to be found.

My favorite one happened a few weeks ago:

Head out ~830AM to our local park/field to walk Izzy before it gets too busy. Have her on a ~25' long lead so she can run around. See a guy about 150' away on a bike with his dog on a leash... then he stops, unclips the dog, and it sprints full speed directly towards us.

We stop, I reel Izzy in and go pick her up because this dog is clearly not slowing down and is probably 60-70lbs. Guy bikes over yelling "don't worry he's friendly!" and then proceeds to tell me he adopted the dog earlier that week and this was his attempt to socialize the dog. Then his dog gets low to the ground and starts to growl at us pretty aggressively. I calmly told him this field was not an offleash area, and to please leash him to keep his dog under control if he is new to you and doesn't listen to your recall yet. Get a "ya ok bud" as he rides off with his still unleashed dog sort of following him as they go approach some other people with leashed dogs.

Seriously dude? Even if I didn't have a little dog with me, I'd still be worried about a large dog running full speed towards me. I contemplated calling bylaw but I knew they wouldn't get there in time to catch the guy.

The majority of people near my place are great with their dogs, but there are always a few douches to watch out for.

Garage
Had what looks like a red tail hawk swoop through my yard twice today.
Each time it had a fat little vole or gopher clutched in it's talons.
Hope it hangs around a couple more weeks. Lunch is on.

Free range cats haven't been doing their job for the last couple years here.
The coyotes have been eating them in preference to the smaller snacks.

Well I had a stressful night last night!

~8PM Izzy was asleep on my lap, then suddenly jolts awake and her whole body is twitching like crazy and this goes on for about a minute. Once it stops I went to put her down and she couldn't stand and just kind of flopped over. Then carried her to my bathroom where she proceeded to puke 4 times and all of her dinner came up. I immediately figured a seizure, and rushed her to the emergency vet. On the 30 min drive she was just staring at me wide eyed and trembling.

Vet was able to see her right away, said all of her vitals seemed normal and didn't have any obvious neurological issues. Then asks if we went for a walk and if saw her eat anything before this happened... at about 630PM we went for a short walk around my condo building but I hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary. We did however walk past an area where lots of people smoke weed / cigarettes etc.

Vet said "well she mostly likely ate a joint or roach, because she looks REALLY high right now". She was disoriented, and would act all freaked out if you reached out to touch her face. Because she wasn't totally comatose stoned, they figure she ate a very small amount, but because she's so small that is all it would take to have a pretty good reaction.

So we got a $300 emergency vet bill and took her home to sleep it off. As of this morning she is a bit groggy, but walking fine, going to the bathroom fine, and drank some water and ate some breakfast. Currently passed out fast asleep on my lap.

Guess I know where we won't be going on our evening walks anymore!

Just make sure that no shady dogs start hanging around.

Someone at my complex has a friend over occasionally who has a dog. The dude's dog constantly tries to attack Haru, it happened again today where it was snarling and actually biting Haru (fortunately no injuries) and all the dude says is "it's that breed! My dog never gets along with that breed. It happens at my complex too with that breed!"

So basically he was blaming Haru being a shiba for his dog being reactive and aggressive.

People with dogs hate taking responsibility for stuff like this. It's ridiculous.

That sucks. We had a a similar situation with our first golden where she nosed in something that she swelled up like a balloon. Same deal - emergency vet on a three-day weekend... 100 bucks and an over the counter anti-histamine. it was 25 years ago and looks like prices went up.

Did they tell you to give her all the cheetos she wants?

The other owner isn't taking responsibility as he should, but I can tell you that I've seen that before where a dog takes aggressive action against one specific breed.

My brother said basically the same thing.

Weird thing is the guy also kept saying they're both "Asian breeds" (as in they should get along because of it or something) but as far as I can tell, his is a cavapoo or related breed, which... isn't Asian? Dunno. Dude seems weird.
