Well, that definitely sucks.

Looks like the only choices you have are to get it repaired, are sale as is. Either way you are out a good chuck of change. You just have decide which one is worse.

I have no idea how much it's worth without an engine, maybe a little above scrap value?

If you get the engine repaired it's worth maybe $8,000 private sale according to KBB so repair+current value is going to be greater than that so you won't break even on the repair, most likely unless you can do the work yourself or get some trade school to do it for you.

I can only tell you what I'd do. If I like the car, and I'm good driving it for another 3 to 4 years, everything else is in good shape, I'd get it fixed. You aren't going to find the equivalent car for the same amount of money as the repair, and you'll basically be resetting the clock.

I've actually done this on more than one occasion, repaired a car that wasn't worth the repair cost because it was cheaper than replacing it. Never had any regrets. Some people have a stigma about doing that though, and that's OK.

If, on the other hand you are thinking "to hell with the cheese, I just want out of the trap" then well, sell it for what you can get, and move on.

That's a tough position. I was in the same position last month when my motor went post recall at only 40K. If you have the resources to get it fixed then you have 2 options, fix or sell as is. If you lack the resources then you don't really have an option. I'm upside down even before the motor went due to mods. The motor puts me way in the red. I love the car and have it well sorted and my feeling was that it would be a shame to not get it fixed and enjoy it. Selling would mean I still have to buy another toy and that would be more costly than the 11K I'm spending.

It's extremely unfortunate that we were put in this position with a recall required for registration here in Calif that posed no safety threat and has such a terrible history of failure and no recourse from the dealer or Toyota.

If you've got the time, space, etc., find a salvage car with good engine. Swap the engine, part out salvage car and get a good chunk of your money back.

That's what I was thinking so I put it out there at 4. As of now there does seem to be some serious interest at 4 so if I sell I'll go that way.

I was thinking that. I found a few complete cars that are rear end wrecks and have everything intact from the back seat forward. Those would make a good platform to strip and actually make some money on parting it out. I'd learn a hell of a lot along the way too which is good. I do sort of have driveway space and could make that work. Gotta get it past the wife though

@Dadhawk I've been there a few times too and each time it's a tug of war with myself. This time it's a little different because I really do like the car and would be fine with driving it for a few more years. I know the thing inside and out, know the history and have a fair idea of what else needs to be done to keep it reliable for the next few years. Resources are scarce this year though and it will be a stretch to make it happen. If I can move it for 4k I'll have a few extra cents to make my beater less of a beater and get the other car that's sitting in the driveway functional again but then I don't have a car I like anymore and have to resign myself to a 14mpg, 15 year old rusty Durango. But, I will save a shit ton of $$ not paying the insurance on the BRZ and won't have any more car payments which will be awfully nice. Uggh, I know which way this is going to go...

No just that it's past that point. I was really surprised but I guess they don't actually expect people to really use their cars. All of these low mileage leases kind of prove their point though, I know so many people that turn in 3 year leases with 20-25k on the car, I do that in 9 months!

Well, sometimes life just ain't fair. -

Probably best you set that car aside (or sell it) and patch up your other vehicles and wait until your income stream comes back on line.

Good on ya.

Well it looks like I found a 64k mile short block from a 14 FRS. Does anyone know if there is anything that will need to be changed other than new head gaskets and bolts? ECU is the same, etc?
