Whoa, some misconceptions are flying around here about the ca-fi unit.

First, @Brody602 - The Ca-Fi unit doesn't use a WiFi OBD2 reader. It uses a USB one (11$ shipped on amazon). I like this approach because it frees up the WiFi connection for a tether from your phone. And yes, it has dual zone so you can listen to music with everything else going on. As far as Jelly Bean goes... if you're only concern is stability, then I wouldn't worry at all. I've only had one incident of a force close, and it was because of a corrupt MP3... I tried playing the same MP3 on my JB phone and it crashed as well. You have to keep this in context. 99.99999% of people buying a head unit will never need Jelly Bean or any features of it. A LOT of people just say it has to have it just because they know it's the latest OS without considering if it would actually be used. Now, as far as the hardware is concerned. It has a 1GHz SoC with 512mb of RAM. This is the same speed as the HTC HD2 with more ram. They've ported JB onto the HTC HD2 and have gotten it to run, so I'm assuming it should support it. Oh, and the unit has 5V pre outs. Something a tablet mounted to the windshield will never, ever provide.

@Sony - I don't know if/when a Jelly Bean update will be available for it. I've been told by the manufacturer that they plan on updating it *at some point* without any indication of when or what they are updating it to. But as I've said above, no one would use it anyway. So we'll see. I have a system image ripped from it and would love to work with @ProTekk on here to see if root is obtainable.

I guess I miss understood the OBD connection, so you have a usb cable going from the back of your HU into your footwell area to the OBD device? What are it's storage abilties? i.e. I want to install the TomTom app for gps navigation instead (not sure if it's supported with 2.2 though) Also do you have a website or something to the ca-fi unit so I can take a closer look, and maybe order it later down the road if I make a decision? as far as pre outs are concerned, I only have 1 purpose for my nexus 7 and its to run torque and gps.

Thanks,
Brody

My thoughts on how to start the reverse engineer process for the oil temp.

Should also be able to do similar with other sensors of this type on the car

Basically getting just the oil temp to change without getting any other sensor to change so as to narrow down in the ton of data where the oil temp data is.

Locate oil temp sensor.(I have heard its on the bottom of the oil filter assembly)

Get a heating pad

Heat up the heating pad.

Using an infrared thermometer find the max temp achieved by heating pad

Put key to position that oil temp will start being displayed, I think the acc or on position, I will need to confirm with my ecutek cable

Start data logging

Get a first temperature reading of the oil assembly without the heating pad using the infrared thermometer

Wrap oil filter assembly with heating pad. Leave for about an hour to allow the entire assembly to get heat soaked.

Take a second temp reading of oil assembly

Review the data

Find what data moved

Now that you have the PID that is moving you must determine how the data translates into the cold temp reading you got and the high temp reading that you got

That should be the PID and the equation needed for the custom PID in torque

Anyone want to do the leg work on this one since I'm 2000k from my car?

Sent from my flux capacitor using Taptalk

I can't do it yet as I still don't have my FR-S hopefully someone would do the leg work, also curious about determining the equation, can you be smore specific on how to determine the equation? Also when do you plan on travelling back 2000k?

Yea, I have fairly decent size feet and have yet to hit the OBD adapter. I run a USB splitter in the glove box. USB is actually better than a Wifi or a Buetooth adapter because it refreshes the information in very close to real time. There is maybe a .1-.2 second delay. It refreshes a lot faster, too.

You can use up to a 32GB microSD card, 32GB USB stick and it has 8GB of storage in the unit.

I've used Be-On-Road, Sygic, CoPilot, and NavFree on the head unit. Settled on Be-On-Road for nav.

You can hit me up on PM if you have any other questions. I don't want to hijack the thread

I've seen that is possible to import the Torque .csv file into racechrono2avi and get a video overlay of various instrument in sync with a video...have you tried tomething similar?

I like where this mount sits, but doesn't it block your windshield view somewhat?
As it sits relative to eye level, the top of the nexus is slightly below the hood line. My Bro thought the same thing when he saw the pictures, but sitting in the car it is perfect

@2forme I've been slacking man, my apologies! Might be easier if we could take some time one day and discuss everything via Skype or something similar. Really uncertain if I'll be able to swing up that way any time soon.

There is no glare from the display, it's just the camera with sun right in front of it. Got the charger looped around behind and into glovebox charger. It's slightly in the way of headunit, but all corner touch controls are still operable.

This mount clips where center console joins with dash, and clips in vent. It's a little close to headunit, so I might 'upgrade' to Beatrush's mount that goes in the slit to the right a little.

Thanks for editing your post with an update of The pro clip mount, one more question, does the passenger have easy access to the H.U. as well? Without it being a pain in the ass anyways? (My girlfriend likes to choose the songs ;p) also got my Nexus 7 today and I'm quite impressed/happy :-) its my first android device ;D

Congrats! Pics...or it didn't happen!!!! lol

I am currently waiting for my 7 as well. I decided on the 7 vs the Nexus 10 (for in car use). Didn't really feel the need to have something bigger just for daily car use. The 10....on the other hand....i can enjoy watching/ streaming vids with all its viewing pleasure. Are you deciding on the Pro Clip?

Does anyone else have other suggestions for mounting (aside from the Pro-clip and Spartan65)?

I was able to bring the Torque .csv file into the racechrono one, now I can make overlay instruments to put them on videos using Racechrono2avi.
What I still have to work out is how to bring more data, for example boost, on screen, as it's the throttle. Copying the torque boost column into the RC throttle column works but the scale and name are wrong (obviously)
Also, do you know how to make the background transparent, is it even possible?

Have anyone used RaceRender?
