So got my Ryzen 9 yesterday. Plugged her in and didn't get a post, so I figured I'd need to update the bios. Did that this morning and everything started out great, but once windows started to boot, it froze half way. I can get into the bios no problem, but it won't let me get into windows. I tried a slightly older bios file and same thing happened. Any thoughts? It's an MSI B550i btw.

Are you going from Zen2 to Zen3? You may need to update the bios with the Zen2 CPU installed.

Edit: unless the board has a bios flashback feature, then you can do it without a cpu at all.

It's zen3 to zen3. Ryzen 5 to Ryzen 9. I did the bios flashback since the stock bios didn't post. But now it's giving me that wired freeze. Got into safe mode but that's not really useful for me.

If you can get into safe mode it's probably something that's auto loading at startup.
Turn everything off and see if it boots.
taskmanager>startup
and everything not MS in MSCONFIG

You're using a preconfigured copy of windows?

A processor change has always required reloading windows for me to get all the appropriate drivers/locations sorted out.

I've swapped MOBO and processors a couple times now with the same NVME with windows set up on it, and it's never done this before.

Make sure there weren't bios changes - a flash nearly always resets it but try a clear anyway.

UEFI on/off for example, though I'm not sure you'd get safe mode if that were set wrong - haven't tried it though. That assumes you know how it used to be configured.
My bet if you were to swap back to the other CPU with no other changes is you'd still not boot.

I would clear CMOS and then load optimized defaults in the bios, see if that boots.

If that doesn’t work I would swap the old processor back in just to make sure that still boots. If it does at least you know it’s either a configuration problem or a hardware issue with the new processor.

Ok, cleared CMOS with R9 still installed: fail
Swap R5 in: fail
Updated BIOS with R5 in: fail

So... at least I know it wasn't the expensive R9.
Damn you MSI!
I'll try a few other tips if anyone has anything, otherwise might revert back to an Asus B550i

It's bios a setting which was not the default and/or where the default changed, causing your OS issues. I'd take a look at UEFI on a whim, as I think that was not shipping as default for a long time, but recently has been. Do you know if your OS drive boot sector is GPT or MBR? Some settings depend on GPT. Could be >4gb access or something like that as well.

Lol I know nothing of what you are saying. Until this past Christmas I'd never built a PC before.

Where in the process is it failing? Do you have any indication?
