Vegans and pescatarians may be less likely to get severely ill from coronavirus, according to a new study. People surveyed who did not eat animal products were 73% less likely to get seriously ill from COVID.

It took about 5 minutes to actually find the paper. The first page of hits were all links to popular press articles that gave no details of the paper. How surprising.

The paper combined a number of dietary regimens into "plant based diets" that are not necessarily completely vegetarian.

Quote:
To increase precision, we analysed three dietary patterns after combining dietary patterns that are similar in terms of dietary intake. We combined ‘whole foods, plant-based’ diets and ‘vegetarian’ diets into one category (‘plant-based diets’, n=254). Then, we combined ‘whole food, plant-based’ diets, ‘vegetarian’ diets or ‘pescatarian’ diets into another category (‘plant-based diets or pescatarian diets’, n=294) to test if a spectrum of plant-based diets which include animal products are associated with COVID-19 severity.
Other than that, 73% is pretty significant. It would be interesting to see some follow-up studies with different population targets.

Was in Orlando the past few days, Animal Kingdom and SeaWorld.

Disney requires masks inside and on attractions. All employees were masked. It does not require masks in open areas for guests fully vaccinated. Only about 5% of the visitors were wearing masks full time. Their "reservations to limit contact" is a joke. The park may not have been near capacity but there was no way to social distance if you had wanted to. They were out of reservations (I heard a walkup get turned away).

SeaWorld allows both employees and guests that are fully vaccinated to go unmasked in all areas. I'd say about 20% of the employees and 10% of the quests were masked. They also required reservations, but having been to SeaWorld multiple times, I could say it was only moderately busy, and they were selling tickets that day (had reservations available) so it was a "slow" day for them.

In Orlando as a whole, most places no longer required "fully vaccinated" employees or guests to mask.

Are people required to prove they are fully vaccinated? Some people might bitch and complain if the park does require some type of proof upon entry to receive a "no mask" bracelet. Some (not all) people have been fully rational during the pandemic.

Here in Ontario patios and retail shops, hair and nail salons etc are reopening on Friday. We are having a fourth wave of sorts with the delta variant currently at 25% of detected cases with the percentage on a steady rise. However, with our vaccination progress and safe practice we should not see another swift increase in the total number of cases, so that is good. This is the first phase of a 3-stage opening process that is determined based on vaccination milestones.

Google man.

We will not require our guests to provide proof of vaccination but ask everyone to respectfully comply with our revised policy.

Other than that, 73% is pretty significant. It would be interesting to see some follow-up studies with different population targets.

It seems like they had data on individual diets, but also combined diets in categories to tease out the relationship and correlations between different diets. It increases the significance of the results when the analysis teases out confounding variables and tries to eliminate categorical errors.

I wouldn’t base my diet, or expect anyone to base their diet on this one study, but it is interesting. There is plenty of studies that discuss the inflammatory effects of a diet with meats or the health implications of a diet high in red meat for heart disease, but this is interesting how they specifically looked at the relationship between diet and COVID.

No. it was pretty much posted as @NoHaveMSG stated.

There was a small percentage of unvaccinated people complying. I'm assuming that I didn't happen to be there on a day when 90+% of adult guests were vaccinated, but that was the rate of unmasked folks I saw, easily.

As you know you have almost zero chance of hospitalization as a result of Covid19 at this point so you're good. I would still feel more at ease if there was a way to determine whether people were actually vaccinated. It's such a tourist place plus politics so they are willing to do what they have to to accommodate everybody and if this policy creates no controversy, why not.
There is minimal danger posed to the vaccinated but it leaves unvaccinated people free to pass the latest VOC back and fourth. I bet many of the masked people were vaccinated. In general there are probably very few people out there who didn't have the shot.

In the end, for some people there wasn't really a pandemic or at least they feel better if they can treat it as such. I wouldn't be thrilled that unvaccinated people are free to make their own judgement but c'est la vie, if there's another round of hospitalizations I won't be accompanying them.

Agree with all that, and it is pretty much the discussion those with me and I had going into it.

Bottom line, I was concerned for those not vaccinated but it is their risk.

For me, it's no different than the polio vaccine or my "naturally obtained" vaccination for Chicken pox. I would not hesitate to help people with either disease given the slight risk of me getting it.

before covid, i really didn't care for crowds. but made do when i had to.

now, amusement parks have almost zero appeal to me.

i don't even like going to the grocery store if the lots half full anymore...

I love amusement parks, but not crowded ones. I usually only go after determining the slowest attendance days, but I did not control this timeline. (MomHawk told me "We have a chance to see the Grandbaby, gas up the car")
