the car is not worth that much. imo, its worth just about what it costs in america. its a great car for its price but its far from a great car. granted i dont know what your local car market looks like but i would assume that there is a used miata or something similar that will give you 95% of the frs experience for 15% of the price.

That is one steep price for FR-S. If you struggle to finance that price, I would look for something else.

For some of these prices wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy one in japan/US and import it?

My best friend in Japan owned a car dealership outside MCAS Iwakuni. He mostly catered to service members but would occasionally sell JDM car parts on ebay and he and I ran that little "side business" together. Now, without taking into account military TMO moves of JDM, RHD cars into the US (which is considered "gray-market"), and illegally imported cars (black market), in order to bring a JDM car into the US is monumentally difficult. If this were not the case, there would be FLOODS of JDM RHD cars being sent to the US all the time since, for example, I can buy a 1992 Nissan Skyline GT-R over there in decent shape for less than $10k. I bought mine for $8k and that same car with legal registration would be worth well over $40k here in the US. Now for the tricky part. First, you have to buy the car in Japan and without licensing it, that will cost you extra since you can not ship a car out of Japan if the license is valid. It must be deregistered first to clear customs, this costs ALOT! The next step is to organize for shipping, and actually, that is the cheap and easy part since there are many freight companies that will allow you container space for the car. Once the car hits US shores, the red tape comes out and this is where you will incur the most cost and run the biggest risk. In customs, you will have to pay (in advance) the bond for the car which is directly tied to the value of the car. For a $10,000 car this would run just over $20,000. That money is held until the car clears the bonding area. The car will not be released from the bonding area until it has been cleared by customs and that means FULL inspection of the vehicle and paperwork. That means you will need to have DOT and TSB certification for THAT vehicle (similar vehicle doesn't count), you will have 30 days to get the car licensed before customs will release it. There are some other steps but I did this 10 years ago so you will have to forgive my memory. If for any reason you fail to meet all of the requirements within 30 days of the car reaching US shores, your bond will be forfeit and the car will be destroyed. There were a LOT of GTRs, ITRs and Silvias lost this way. There have been a few cars brought to US shores for private owners but the vast majority were sent to tuner shops for race/show vehicles. I only helped successfully send ONE R32 GTR to the States and he was the son of a prominent US Senator. They don't play by the same rules as the rest of us I assure you. Scott

Depends what other cars cost in your market and what you're looking for. If there are no other lightweight RWD coupes for under $40k (and that's what you're looking for), then yes it's worth it. If there are 5 others, then it might not be.

When I researched the GT86, the starter version is $31k, and the more complete version (larger rims/wheels, ventilated rear discs, and other comforts) is close to $39k. Eventhough $31k is cheap in comparison to the other cars I mentioned above, It's still frakking expensive, and even more considering what the normal wages are around here. Whether it's worth the price is really up to you. |

The 86 costs the same all around the world. The difference in local prices is only caused by local taxing, like import tax, sales tax and "new car tax" like we have here in the Netherlands and Scandinavia.
So it rarely makes any sense to import a new car, because once you cross the border and register it you will be charged with all the local taxes nevertheless. Sometimes getting one from a neighboring country could save you a few bucks when you can find a place that offers a better discount, but considering all the hassle even that is usually not worth it. Some of us are simply more lucky where they were born than others. |

Yes, in my homeland there is a 45% import duty + an excise tax of up to 120% based on the value of the vehicle + insurance + freight
so a $24k (after shipping and insurance) car ends up costing $66k, and that is if you import it yourself and not a dealer.
