I installed a Atoto S8 Gen2 7" (also available with bigger screens) in my BRZ. It does everything and no problems at all. Never crashed. I keep it up to date regularly.
I use it most of the time with Waze + Torque (Android split screen capability) and MP3 player. Carplay is OK but too limited. I prefer using it as a full featured Android (internet via Wifi from the iPhone).
You need some time to setup correctly Android though.

for my 86 I use android head unit from aliexpress

Kapud Android 11 Car Radio 7' For Toyota Rav4/Hilux/Camry/Corolla/Terios/Aqua/Vish CarPlay AUTO 8Core DSP GPS WIFI 4G SWC BT

https://a.aliexpress.com/_mNBI4OO

and it was plug and play, no need of any splicing or any advance wiring ( except for reverse camera trigger )

it comes with:
- carplay
- android auto
- google play
- 4g
- volume knob ( the main reason I chose this specific unit )
- front camera input ( you can make it run for 10s+ after reversing )

and it was cheap

but the quality its not the same level as known brands

built in microphone is the worst and I couldn't connect external microphone it refuse to recognize it specially in carplay app
so hands free call is not an option for now

this picture of my car after I install it 10 months ago
and another picture using carplay and also shows the brightness under the sun

I'm disappointed, was expecting that you would have a 78rpm vertical vinyl player in the dash...

Well, I tried to install one, but between the shift lever and the emergency brake handle, there just wasn't enough room -

It cost me around 240$ so it is cheap at least for head unit with knops

it comes with wiring adapter
audio is good but little bit low so I don't know if the problem is the speakers or the head unit, because I purchased the car used with very bad aftermarket head unit, so I don't have a reference with OEM one

Grabbin the one that's $84. Didn't realize what all the different options were until you said you paid $250. I don't have a backup cam or anything so hopefully it's the one I'd need
My sound system is stock, so I'm curious how it holds up. Just tired of looking at my dated radio, in a car I otherwise love
