Anyone know of tuners in the Portland, Oregon area? I'm new to this tuning aspect of things and my local installation shop isn't one of them. I appreciate the seasoned input, but have to admit I'm a total neophyte when it comes to this process. I'm looking forward to going further with the tuning, but felt this a solid way to start and get back on the road promptly with the HKS kit with the flash tuner onboard.

Install scheduled for the coming week.

Anyone else have specific HKS SC feedback?

Haha

Most diesels (small cars) in Europe use 0W_30 and less :P

Don't sweat it. Haven't seen or heard of damages that resulted from using a more viscous engine oil (the Subaru BRZ japanese user manual also lists 5W_40 as a suitable alternative to 0W_20 "water", stock engine).

I learned my lesson using 0W_20 (was without an appropriate oil cooler, basic bolt-ons and tune) in my engine:

Now I only use quality PAO/Ester engine oil with the aforementioned 5W_40 viscosity (Ravenol RCS is closer to 5W_50 than 5W_40) + more frequent oil changes.

As for the HKS GT kit. What struck me is the naturally aspirated - linear power delivery nature of the car/engine has been kept.

For me personally, it's perfect. No sudden surges of torque and very predictable.

I'm using 5w40 oil , i wouldn't go lower than 0w30 and not if you re hard tracking it (aka stay away from high temperatures to avoid low pressure)
If you find your oil never going over 105-110 Celsius because you have an oil cooler for example and never beat your car for long , there is no real reason to go thicker

No tune recommendations? Good oil advice, but not much else.

Guess I expected a shiny knowledge gem instead, a ended up talking about oil when I wanted power info.

I did like this aspect while doing my research on turbo vs supercharger. I chose this setup for the same reason after reading how turbo torque spikes can be hard on rods. And a couple pics of rods going through the side of engines, that's always a convincing argument too.

I don't have it back from the shop yet to comment.

Just got it back from install at 6pm tonight. 10-15 miles on it and really like it’s linear power climb. Nearly same as FA in feel, just comes on harder, and quite a bit faster. First impressions are good.

The mishimoto oil cooler didn’t fit easily with this kit so we scrubbed install for a later date or different model. So, for some of the keep it basic proponents, that’s what I have.

The shop liked the kit and found it very thorough. I only opened the SC, took a pic and pulled the directions and left it alone. They liked the power change as well. Traction control comes on much sooner now.

On the commute, passing is very much improved. Mileage otherwise looks about nominal so far since my commute is often clogged up a bit. Forty mile round trip commute for reference, rural roads between towns. Opened up a bit this morning and ran it through 4th gear hard. Wahoo, comes on much better in low rpm, and really strong when the cam timing shifts in. Didn't notice the SC whine until about 6k. I'm impressed, it's much quieter than I expected.

No temp issues noted, water same as usual. I did go take a twisty bit on lunch today and got jiggy with it for about mile with a WRX behind me. That's where I noticed the most difference. I could shift less due to the torque dip being mostly gone and stay in 3rd. Also, you can rip the tires out much easier.

I'm impressed, so was the mechanic. He said it was a good fitting kit and had good instructions and made a whomping difference out of the car.

Still in the honeymoon, but liking the first impressions.

Enjoy the honeymoon period. This is when your heart and mind are in sync.

HKS is a reputable brand so we expect no less interms of how the kit is put together. Did you go with their standard tune or get an ECUTEK tune?

At some point the mind will play games saying this is the power the car always had and should've had and then its business as usual. chasing the next set of power gains!

Still on the base tune from HKS. Been two days man. I get the chasing power aspect, but this is plenty for now. I’ll need more handling bits and fatter tires next.

My goals are still daily commuter based. Reliability first.

I put the pilot S4 summer tires on today and went for a ride. Felt good, lot more brakes.

I am just joking. It is all people dependent.

On the handling and tyres, honestly the car does not need more. Dont spend more money than needed, is the sensible advise. Supporting mods are only needed if you do track days , autocross etc and want to get every millisecond saved. Just modulate your right foot (accelerator and brake) according to the situation and road conditions and you will not need to do further mods. Otherwise once you are into the game, it's a very slippery slope.

I understand this rabbit hole. I’ve had a CJ7 jeep since 94. It caught on fire in 95 and I rebuilt it. Not going nuts with this car. I’m pretty happy now with the SC and minor brake upgrades to keep it simple. It’s enough.
