Advice for “ideal” brz

After serious consideration I’m going to take the plunge and buy my mid-life crisis mobile. As you may have guessed I’m most likely going to get a brz and if not a frs or 86. I have a handful of questions but first here’s my situation; I’m a function over fashion guy with a whole lot of surgical metal in me. I live in the western side of the Rockies where the best roads are usually the least travelled and maintained, where wildlife is more of a concern than cops. I doubt I’ll be “tracking” the car, but there’s a world class track 150km to the south and I had a blast autocross racing in my 02 wrx. My first question is should I start with a sti tuned ‘18 ts for around $26000 or ‘13 for approximately $16000 with the same km (50k). I want to get coil overs and either staggered or slightly wider wheels, and I’m going to do the uel header/tune. My Subaru whisperer was even talking about combining a 2L and an old legacy 2.2L and building a stroker! ADVICE PLEASE and thanks!

'ideal' is a handful. ask anyone who their 'ideal' mate is, and you'll get as many different answers as number of people you ask!

given your back road requirement, i would suggest looking at what @grumpysnapper has done to mod his car for a no-compromises australian back roads driver.

i would generally suggest the '18 over a '13 due to overall improvements made in the '16 update, though a ts over a 'standard' model could be up for debate yet. the '13 also had some minor teething issues being the very first model year for the platform, which may or may not show up in more rigorous driving.

and while you've definitively decided on a brz over an fr-s/86, know that besides some stick-on badges, and different stylistic plastic on the front end, all of these cars are built side by side in the same factory, with the exact same mechanicals and sub structure, so anything that has been done or can be done to any other of those models is a possibility for your [future] brz as well.

Thanks for the advice. I’m most likely going to end up getting a brz because there’s more of them in western Canada than 86/frs combined. I’d prefer the Toyota badge after owning my worst Subaru by far, an 07 impreza hatchback manual. P.O.S!
