Don't think that head unit is garbage but it definitely looks aftermarket. Particularly those controls... It looks like it mounts on the left side and protrudes out from the wheel, which (if so) seems like it would make for some awkward spirited driving and a weird way of actually adjusting/using the controls.

I appreciate the post. However the thread was not about other ideas how to control the radio. It was about swapping steering wheels and anyone that has been successful in doing so.

It can be done, however LOTs of parts needed and the biggest issue is the clock spring. If you can get the correct clock spring you then need to run the correct wires to the clock spring back to the radio. I decided not to do it.

What’s the part number for the correct clock spring?

I think the best bet for this swap while not spending too much money would be to find a junkyard steering column that is intact for the swap. Good luck though.

And COMPLETE. After lots of research I was able to do this!

Was able to re-pin the factory clock spring. Adding 5 wires to it. Running then my own wiring to the radio with a Maestro SW kit. Then programming the Maestro SW kit for the correct resistance on the wheel and including the illumination.

What was required to do this was the wheel and airbag with all the wiring and the Maestro SW kit.

So I own a 2015 BRZ and now have a 2017 Steering wheel with OEM buttons. Works like a champ!

How can you say this with a straight face when you have the stock head unit? It is one of the worst sounding things I have ever come across in a car. I could find a JVC unit that would be an upgrade over the stocker.

Edit: Ah, after reading this again you must be talking about the clip-on steering wheel control. Yes, agreed. Carry on.

Yea the clip on.

I have a Pioneer NEX W44000. I replaced my OEM 2015 steering wheel with a OEM 2017 steering wheel with controls.

Any chance you will put a guide together for repinning the old clockspring? The general consensus on this process until now was that it was too cost prohibitive to do by just straight up swapping in new 2017+ pieces.

Being able to retain the original clockspring and save the money may sway a lot of people to go ahead with this mod if it's not too difficult.

Well re-pinning the clock spring is completely up to the installation. You can re pin it however you wish. The 2015 clock spring is only using 2 pins for the cruise control but the plug supports 12 pins. So you choose which ones you want to pin.

The steering wheel buttons have 5 wires (so you would choose 5 pins). Thy are typically parallel to the bottom of the clock spring. The 5 wires are Illumination -, illumination +, SW1 (Vol and Seek), SW2 (Phone, Source, Center Button), and SWG (feed). I do not know what wire is what as they are different depending on what button kit you get.

Other items you will need is the Airbag and all the parts that make up the steering wheel. I have posted below the part numbers I used. Also again you have to make a custom SW file with resistances.

Vol +/Phone Disconnect 1000ohm
Vol -/Center Button 3000ohm
Seek-/Source 330ohm
Seek+/Phone Connect 1ohm

Parts:
98211CA130VH - Airbag
34312CA150RG - Steering Wheel
34317CA040 - Steering Wheel Lower Piece
34318CA020 - Cap Cover Right
34318CA000 - Cap Cover Left
34327CA010 - Steering Wheel Damper
83154CA050 - Steering Wheel Trim/Buttons

Also, you will need some custom wiring harnesses. There are a couple companies out there that make them.

What I ended up doing is purchasing a 2017 Dash complete wiring harness on ebay for $50. I stole the pins and wiring harnesses from it to make this. The 2015 clock spring does not have the wires or the pins so you have to get the custom pins for the connectors. I just stole them from the 2017 harness. You could also just purchase a 2017 clock spring as well which might be easier since the harness and pins are there already.
