They are big. The Mach-E just isn’t appealing to me looking like a lifted Mustang. I prefer the retro vibes of this.

Comparing the evolution of these giant castings. Big $$$ savings. Crazy fast evolution.

It's kinda interesting you describe it that way. To me it's almost like a lifted Mazda 3 hatch in that it's rounded (what's the equivalent crossover? CX-30?) but has Mustang-style front/rear. So while it has Mustang styling, I don't really see it as a lifted Mustang.

I'm definitely exaggerating like saying a BMW X3 is a lifted 3-series. The Mach-E isn't a bad looking vehicle. It just reminds me too much of the Mustang with the taillights and some inspirational cues. For some reason, similar design language across models in a BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, other Ford models is fine. Stealing the look of the tail lights was like when people put Corvette or Supra tail lights on their car; it just isn't right. Lambo taillight copy cats are almost as bad, but at least those are typically on sports cars and not retrofits. The Mach-E gives me retrofit vibes even though they are bespoke.

OK, I take it back, there is something worse than no buttons, stick-on buttons that look like the don't belong in the vehicle.

No secret, given I have a thread on it here, but the 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ Sport AWD remains my choice. Hope to convert my '23 order to a 2024 soon.

That's the way I see them as well. Probably why I'm pulled to the LYRIQ. It's a well priced vehicle that happens to be an EV. If they had an ICE version with comparible specs (AWD/500HP) of it, I'd buy that over the EV.

It is definitely one of the classier and better looking choices. The cabin layout is appealing.

When the objective gets close enough, the subjective starts to become more important. This is where people will make preferences for the car that embodies their needs and personality, which is why I don't think Tesla will dominate once other manufactures catch up enough--the key word is enough. That is what everyone has been saying, but the question is what is enough?

If Munro is accurate (I can't imagine him not being accurate because this is his job), the ace up Tesla's sleeve could be its ability to cut prices to levels other manufactures can't match. For instance, even though the IONIQ is more visually appealing to me and that pulls a lot of weight, there has to be a point where the price of a Tesla becomes too good. Maybe the Tesla is better in performance, in EPA range but also in real usage range and efficiencies, charging algorithm preserves the batteries longer, UI is better; Maybe it has the supercharger network, but I don't care; maybe it has OTA updates, but I don't care; maybe it has FSD, but I don't want it. Maybe it is objectively better, but the value for me isn't enough to sway my opinion from the looks and interface of the car because looks and other subjectivity matter. So maybe the Tesla is a better value at the same price, yet I would get the IONIQ, but what if the Tesla was cheaper by a few thousand? What if it was cheaper by five or ten thousand? There has to be a point for everyone where the price starts to become overwhelmingly compelling.

I'm wondering if they will hover around the average market price and just keep pulling in more money, or maybe they will decide to drastically undercut their competitors. If they had the ability and had the capacity for more production that wasn't being utilized then of course they would do it. I think they will continue ramping production without stopping, and they will drop prices when inventory gets high like they recently did.

Tesla is definitely taking a page out of Henry Ford's book with the Model T. Sell 'em in numbers that keep the factories at 100% and drop the price when you can to keep competition struggling to catch up.

That said, the Tesla exterior design wasn't great to begin with (IMO), and its stale with no sign they plan to update it (unless I just missed it, I don't track it closely). Even the new Roadster has that same basic look, but at least it has some style to it.

We've already talked about the spartan interiors. It is definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

I do think they will capture some additional buyers with lower pricing (and availability) but for most purchasers there isn't a real drive to buy EV. Most of those they capture early will be persons that would have bought Tesla if it had been in their price range, or those that are bound and determined to go EV as their primary or only vehicle (due to the charging network).

Tesla has done an amazing job of starting from zero and now being the 15th largest car producer in the world, and largest pure EV producer. although BYD is a close second. As other manufacturers convert over it will be interesting to see if price alone plays in as a huge factor.

Tesla leaks Magic Dock

This could be a good or bad thing for Tesla. The Supercharger network is obviously something that sets them apart, so I don't know if this will bring them revenue or just reduce the value proposition for someone choosing their EV over a competitor. It would definitely make other EVs more attractive, but their goal as a company is to accelerate the adoption of EVs. Maybe having the revenue from other EV owners and having more EVs on the road will just boost demand for their products, so it is a win win. Tesla owners will likely be grumpy seeing someone "in their spot". This could be a recipe for some really great "Karen in the wild" moments that are caught on camera.

Frankly, if I was Musk (and taking him at his word that he wants to promote EV adoption and not just Tesla adoption) I'd spin off the SuperCharger network into it's own company and make it the goal to be the Exxon/BP of ev charging.

Of course, I guess the equivalent of a Exxon Valdez or Deep Water Horizon would be a nuclear plant meltdown, so lets not go with that part.

Ultimately though, bringing competition outside the "it's mine" space would benefit everyone.

I think Tesla has the data to know whether opening the Superchargers will impact charging. I'm sure it will be fine. If anything, the revenue will help with building more Superchargers. With most home charging, I don't think this will be a dealbreaker for Tesla buyers, and it will be a big deal for non-Tesla EV buyers, for sure. Yeah, I think it is a good move.
