Not offering the Supra with a manual transmission is like a ThinkPad without the classic keyboard.

Oh wait...

The lack of a manual option would be a deal killer for me as well.

an article was posted over at SupraMKV claiming that there will be a NA I6 model with a $45k price tag.

They could do this like Supras in the past but hasn’t BMW replaced all NA six cylinder motors with four cylinder turbo engines? Sorry if I’m mistaken, but I am not familiar with all things BMW.

no, you are correct. BMW no longer makes NA motors. im not an engineer, and there is probably a little more work then this, but some are arguing that it should n't be that hard to just to take off the turbos, redesign the intake manifold and tune the ECU.

Yea it is plausible, but why make seperate manifold jigs, head casts, assembly lines, etc when they could just use a turbo four cylinder from an existing platform? The only reason is tradition maybe. I love straight sixes, so a turbo four and a straight six would be a toss up, but most would probably pick a turbo four over a straight six. Hasn’t Ford dropped the V6 Mustang, as an example of this trend?

..considering Toyota has saved costs using existing BMW chassis and engine designs it isn't farfetched to think they could spend a little money and time to develop a NA inline 6 which I would assume would be more ideal as it would share parts with the TT i6. I would imagine Toyota would want to avoid powertrain variations for reliability/cost purposes.

Muscle cars are too difficult to compare with here.

thats what i'm thinking, just keep the tradition of the straight six. personally i would pick a NA I6 over a turbo 4. yes i think the V6 Mustang is dead, but idk if Toyota will follow suit. Ford is also killing off all of the cars with the excepting of the Mustang and Focus.

On a slightly different note. If Toyota wants to keep the bell chime from BMW in the Supra I wouldn't be disappointed. It's actually quite pleasing to my ears.

Covered these forever ago, but nice to see the information is still accurate (though not shocking this late in development). Also, looks like production may indeed begin in the November/December 2018 window as originally reported.

I thought it was gonna end up being new architecture, but I thought it would be derived from an existing design; apparently it is not.

Hmm....now I'm wondering if this is a euro spec number w/o crash or safety add-ons....

Yeah, I'll just go back to anticipating a 3.5k lb land whale just in case.
