Not really. Not sure if much has changed, but ~15 years ago when I got my license, we had to take a written test to get our learners permit. Then, 5 months(?) after the learners permit we were able to take the driving test. Basically was three point turn, park between these cones, then drive around the block with an instructor, and boom you're done. Never took drivers education at school or anything.

It's not required. The bar is embarrassingly low here, in the States.

america, we're down to 25 questions mostly on sign shapes, fog a mirror, and you're good to drive anything up to 10,000 pounds gvw. or about the weight of 4 elephants.

My driving test consistid of driving around the bock. No parrel parking. No 3 point turn. Straight at first intersection. 3 rights. 1 left. Done. 5 minutes total. Then of course DMV's vary. The one near me is the easiest on the island according to everyone. |

Does this not vary widely from State to State? Pretty sure I have read on here that some States have at least some form of graduated system wit restrictions at each stage.

technically yes, states are somewhat varied. many require 1000-ish logged driving hours in varied conditions with a licensed driver, and during the learning permit, and aren't allowed to have non-family members in the car for some time. but the logged hours is a handwritten log, with a family member-- how truthful one's family is varies. there's an eye exam to read characters, and a basic 'around the block' driving test. but it's all distilled down to passing through as many people as possible.

If somebody is using beer cans as a unit of measurement I think it is safe to assume it is your standard Budweiser size not some hipster craft brew can.

Sorta. I had to have supervised experience when I learned. Keep logs, etc. But it wasn't particularly stringent or thorough. |

Wait for the MT if that is what you want. A few months, even a year is not that long to get something you want. This is not an AT vs MT thread, it’s a get what you want thread and having patience.

Canada's driving requirements are pretty lax too.
I think its similar to Murica. It used to be 25 questino written test + driving portion (had the hill park, paralell park, and driving around until the tester was sastisfied and you either passed or didnt) then they introduced a graduated licensing system which would have restricted your driving (something like can't have more than 2 people in the car, can't drive at night after so and so time...something like that...i dont actually know waht the restrictions are) and reduced your available demerit. You had to take a second test at least 6 months after i think to upgrade to "full driver" We might be rolling back away from the GDL system.....(at least in ALberta) Oh and if you were immigrating here, you can just convert your existing drivers license to the Canadian one.....You might need to pass a written test, but im pretty sure there was no driving portion involved (just super easy to get one here) I've driven since 18 (got my license right before they changed to the GDL system) and i have noticed that every year everyone still sucks at driving in winter, but there may actually more worse drivers now than before and i think that has to do with an increase of immigrants who dont know how to drive in CANADA, so they drive like they do back in their home countries (which for all intents and purposes is alot more chaotic) Last edited by Sasquachulator; 11-28-2022 at 10:51 AM. |
