This is my best ever raw time finish at 3rd, a tenth behind an underprepped SST Cayman and like a year behind a well driven EVX Tesla. I was 2nd in PAX behind the Tesla and needed about 7 tenths to catch him. I gave away two and a half tenths blowing the first turn around and think I could have gotten a bit here and there, but the speed differential with the Tesla was insane. There were 3 spots where they hit over 70 mph and I was in the 50's.

I've pretty exclusively ran national events and our locals at Bristol, that are often pretty wide open, the last several years. So trying to hit more of these events where you have to balance aggressiveness and being precise enough to stay clean. I'm regularly in the mix or beat people that do really well nationally, so not sure if STX pax is soft, or I'm trash at bigger events, or the STX talent level is that high. Or maybe a mix.

I wouldn't call STX's pax soft, but the talent level is very very high. It's typically one of the hardest classes to trophy in at Nationals in Lincoln.

@steverife stx nats winner and a few others had their data up on solostorm for awhile, not sure if it’s still there, really identified where I fucked up. (Over-input on the wheel, which I thought I had worked on but clearly not, losing a ton of speed midcorner)

Which, if I was that far off at locals I probably wouldn’t come out lol. For me I know I’m slow to adapt to new surfaces but I did good in ‘22 and have fallen off hard. Humbling. Comparing 2-3 trophy getters nobody is blowing anything or consistently giving away time with their style, it’s all give and take by tenths, the winner gives less and takes more. Really have to get >99% out of it to even be in the conversation.

Cars not bad, my dampers are old but earlier this year a local hotshoe put it within two tenths of top pax on his third run and told me to soften the rear sway a touch so idk, definitely a skill issue putting me in the bottom third.

Final event of the year on Sunday. I'll have one more video after this of Saturday's event with the Central PA region. My dumbass drove up there Saturday and back, then ran here in Pittsburgh on Sunday - which I had to be on site super early to help design the course. Got stuck in major traffic in the trip there going from 2.5 hours to 4.

Anyways, here's what 168 run Yoks look like. They're past the west bars and are very even. More even than the outside tread getting nuked in DS trim with the same amount of runs. Being my 3rd set, I find they fall off around 130-140 runs, but don't tank like 660's and RE-71R do. They're certainly driveable (and enjoyable) at 170, but just might be a bit off pace. Both the Falkens and Bridgestones are frustrating.

Do you change tires for events, bag and store tires, etc?

We've had really good luck, and honestly better results at tours and pros, with tires that have 200 to 230 runs and found those tires faster than 60 run tires in an ABA test multiple times.

I don't. They get put on in April and stay on the entire year. However, the car is garage kept and doesn't get driven other than to the event (30-60 minutes) and back. Rare occasions going to cars and coffee or something.

They're always new in April, dead in October now. When I ran RE's I'd take them off, store them in plastic bags sealed up, and inside under a bed for winter, but they were never the same after being stored.

I may or may not drive them to events, but I pull them off the car and bag and store them inside between events. I typically start a set before nats and run them up to nats the next season, sprinkling in a couple of events with my new nats set.

I did have similar experiences with the previous generation RE's and storing them during the offseason, but the only set of Yoks that has fallen off for me stayed on the car for their whole life during the Covid season.

Oof, I must be doing something wrong with my yoks. I haven't gotten past 100 runs on the last 3 sets. Even wear, but past the wear bars by then. 3 sets a year with lots of codrivers. Lots of Beeville concrete I guess :P

That's 100 Texas sized runs though. Not even accounting for surface, that is probably at least like 175 runs that the rest of us get.

Hah - possibly true. Locals are in the 45 second range, Beeville 3-4/yr including a pro, a tour, and nationals practice) can be as much as 70 seconds. I did keep full track of the course time on a set, ended up being 78.5 minutes across 108 runs.

Course length surely comes to play. Most of ours are ~30 seconds. Some of the longer ones I traveled to this year were in the 45-50 seconds range, but sporadic.

Our one local lot is really gentle on tires as it's very smooth. Another local lot is rather harsh and took a noticeable amount off at the end of the season here doing 4 events in 4-5 weeks.

If it's abrasive concrete and 70 second courses, oof.

Final video I'll be posting this year. 28 is enough lol.

I cringe a little at how wide I was on the first more pronounced left-hander and also the left-hander going into the slalom on the main runway.

I'm very much looking into getting a header and tune for next year. I feel like I'm leaving a good bit on the table here with acceleration in the mid-range throughout courses in general. It's almost like 'free time' left on the table that if I was driving the exact same, it's probably a good 0.5 seconds or more on a 30 second course not there.

Here's what I see:
0:11 - clearly missed the braking point a bit as you noted
0:14 - not setting up left enough to open up the next right hander
0:16 - lifting where you might have been able to squeak through
0:25 - missed the entry a bit as you noted
0:29 might have been able to do that flat or maybe a half lift

Just generally seem to be unwilling to let the car get a slip angle into it. Top of STX means pushing right to and sometimes over the edge of control - you look nice and smooth :P

Here's my vid from last weekend for some comparison:

Agree with everything John said. I'll watch your vids here and there and I definitely think you'd heavily benefit for being more committed and purposeful in your runs. I usually notice a couple of spots where you are lifting and I'm not really sure that you have to. And you aren't really doing anything to correct line and you don't really get back in the throttle with any urgency. Telling myself to be more aggressive doesn't work for me personally. I have to frame it more along the lines of be committed. Make sure you hit your marks and be committed between them.

I can't really speak to any kind of time delta with the header. I'm often impressed by SSC times. But the header and tune make the car 1000 times more fun even if you run the exact same times.
