Fuel Leak repair costs

HOOLLEEEE CRAP! Talk about sticker shock… This is the estimate to repair a fuel leak on my 2018 BRZ tS garage queen. A car I might add which has only covered 28,885 kilometers from new. And of course it is now out of Power Train warranty. (Not that it would have been covered as I’m sure they would have found a way out of that…)
The real kicker is, after waiting almost eight weeks to get this diagnosis some of the parts are on back order. Now the car is sitting at the dealership for who knows how long. I have a buyer for it but he can’t even test drive it now.
PLUS, this estimate is not the final cost nor does it include the 2 hours of diagnostic labour.
Now, which part actually caused the leak? Why replace all these parts? And what about the right hand side?

Can you see the leak? Or just smell gas? Sounds like they are just throwing parts at it hoping something sticks.

I ran a couple of pipe part numbers and there is no reason to replace those. Unless they were damaged during removal. maybe one of them has a crack but all of them seem suspicious.

I did not get a lot of info. I’ll try and get the full story because yeah, that seems like a lot of parts. I was thinking it’s just an injector O ring and it’s spraying a fine mist over the fuel rail. That’s why they didn’t pin point the actual leak when the car was in three weeks ago. I haven’t seen any signs of rodents in the garage in a couple of years. That’s not to say it is not them lil’ beggars chewing on stuff. But if it was wouldn’t the Service Manager tell me that?

I have a Greddy cat back and that's all. And no, I couldn't see anything myself. It took the tech sometime and I think he had it up on the hoist at one point. They told me it was around the fuel rail but wouldn't know exactly what until they had the car tore down. Still confusing as all heck!

Low pressure has gaskets on bottom and top of port injectors.


High pressure would be surprise if it has never been touched.

If it's highpressure fuel rail intake manifold has to come off, which is kinda labor intensive (I'd guess for a tech that has done it a bunch it's 3ish hours for removal and replacement)

Low pressure does not need IM removal

edit: looked up parts and looks like they're replacing DI seals. This quote seems about right as it's fairly labor intensive and a lot of those gaskets are one time use.

Just talked with Subaru’s service department. The fuel lines are one time use items also. While it's apart the tech thought it a wise move to replace the seals as they are prone to failure. What is not known to ever fail (unless someone did something) but did in my case is the fuel rail. So I asked; would Subaru have covered this under the power train warranty if it had happened during the warranty period? Service said probably. So I have asked them to request an after warranty adjustment claim because this car is so well kept and very low mileage. Plus, we own two Subaru’s at present and have owned 5 previously. Cross our fingers that we get this after warranty adjustment.
Oh... and of course it's the fuel rail that is on back order. Why? Because they never fail!

I re-used all the full rails when installing my SC. Did use new seals of course. Edelbrock’s instructions were to re-install the rails.
Thousands of kilometres of happy motoring since.
Note: the factory service manual often suggests replacing non wear parts which are perfectly fine to re-use. Dealer mechanic’s comply. Independent shops not so much.
If you are up to doing the job yourself you would save many $’s.
