TOB replacement, where to go in the GTA?
My '13 FR-S with 77K km will need the TOB replaced this year. It was starting to sound noisy last fall but I barely drove the vehicle. I'm Thornhill, so ideally somewhere not too far.
-Anyone who has already had the job done and felt they were taken care of properly please tell me where you recommend for me to take my car. -Also, how long should a shop bill for this job in terms of amount of time? -Should I order and get the part from Subaru before I go for the repair? The only Subie shop I've ever dealt with previously other than the dealer was Ivan's Garage in Markham 8 or 9 years ago when I bought the supercharger but that doesn't necessarily mean he is the best option. I was fortunate enough to have room at home and did the work myself.
But I will recommend that along with the newest version of the throwout bearing. I would recommend replacing this along with the bearing. https://86speed.com/toyota-front-bearing-retainer-cover I had to do the job twice, after changing the bearing things still weren't smooth until I changed that input cover. The plastic part of the bearing rides along that shaft and the wear from the shaft on the new bearing can cause binding. So just replace both and don't forget to lube the shaft. ;-) It took myself and a friend about 6 hours the first time and 4 hours the second time. I used OEM bearing + clip from Toyota and a Verus fork + pivot, went to Ron's Quality Auto in London. I believe it was 3-4 hours including a fluid change (was doing a bunch of stuff in one go).
As for going to a shop, only you can decide that. At the time I didn't have space to do such a task, so it was worth it for me. |

My 2 car garage is really cramped with stuff, barely able to move things around to remove snows and change oil on the STI so I'll have to bite the bullet. Since I've never dropped a transmission before, as I understand is necessary, probably better to pay for the work.
-Thanks for advice re: retainer cover which might also be worn. -The clutch fork, well again pending inspection. Clutch engages well, I wonder at what % is it best to change the clutch? Will have them change the diff and tranny fluid, which is more than ready by now. lol

XIIImotorsports, they have all the parts, including the Verus clutch fork if you want it, in stock. Most reasonable rates around as well
