If I were to go with a 4cyl swap I would just go with a honda K series engine. Reliable and can be boosted with ease with parts easy to source.

And to piss off plenty of purists

The bad thing is that as soon as you add a lb of boost, it blows the apexi seals so the best rotary is NA.
On my FC I was running a turbo 2 motor fully built with bridge port. I was putting out 15 lbs of boost and the motor was fine the rotors were milled to accept 3mm apex seals and the block was studded and the motor wasn't driven lightly it was a track built drift car I really hate when people who have no real understanding of a subject pretend they do. On the other hand gas milage was about 8 miles a gallon and I had to premix my gas with oil cause I deleted the worthless oil metering pump

Diesel is very difficult for rotaries because you can't get enough compression. Last I heard, Mazda was working still working with hydrogen.

Rotary swap would be awesome, but only reasons why people talk down on rotaries are: yes they are very expensive to keep up and rebuild, when someone doesn't know what they are doing and blows it up, and they do love gas.

I owned an LS Swapped FD that was previously Rotary and had no complaints with it at all. I did the swap because I grew up a muscle car fanatic and the cost of going single turbo properly was the same if not more than doing the LS swap. I decided it was best to do it now so that I could sell my good motor set up to keep the costs down. Another big factory was the gas mileage. I drove from LA to Bakersfield and back and did so with 28mpg.

I had no problems with the rotary, my car ran great. The rotary takes maintenance just like any other sports car and let's not forget this is a 20 year old car. Rubber and plastic dry out and get destroyed by with heat and age. The thing with rotary engines is the amount of heat they produce. Intercooloer upgrade(preferably v-mount), radiator, replace all rubber lines (with silicone ones if possible), aftermarket downpipe and an oil cooler. These are all things we'd upgrade anyway since we're constantly wanting to mod our cars right?

I"m sure a lot of you guys have no first hand experience with a rotary and only know what you've heard/read on the internet. If you ever get a change to drive a rotary powered car, i encourage you to do it. The smooth power delivery and rev happy motors are a blast to drive. Even now with the LS FD, I'd like to get an FC as another project.

And as a side note, I know just as many guys with boxer motors that have had major engine issues as rotary guys.

There is more misinformation in this thread than in the Creation Museum.
An streetable NA 13B can make around 250-300 WHP, depending on what you're willing to live with. Although he has never released numbers Carlos Lopez builds NA 13Bs that trap over 250mph and maths all equate to over 400 WHP. There are plenty of 1000 WHP 13B drag cars on methanol. Rotaries can run on anything. There have been diesel rotaries developed by OEMs, and tinkerers alike. The IMSA FBs ran a kerosene and gasoline blend. Let's not forget the hydrogen Rx8s still running around Japan.
I have quite a few friends who make over 500 WHP on perfectly reliable 13Bs. My last engine build made 197WHP, NA. I averaged 24MPG with a 48 IDA carburetor, it saw 3 full auto cross seasons and over a dozen trips to the drag strip. I put over 50k miles on it. I sold it to a friend in 2012 and it's still running in his FB.
I've been building rotaries since the mid 90s, so I'm partial. Once my BRZ is paid off it will be getting a rotary.
