^The problem there is degradation of Porsche's brand image. Porsche sports cars hold their value very well (in most cases) but the SUVs suffer horrible, horrible depreciation. They're not as well built and are starting to be referred to as "disposable" Porsches. Crap like this will catch up with Porsche eventually.

I think Porsche should have not been such cheapasses and cast a completely new small displacement 6 cylinder shortblock/head for the refresh with a maximum of 89mm bore (I guess that would be like 95mm bore spacing instead of the 108? or so the current engines have). Chopping 2 cylinders off then increasing the price was a bad move. Maybe a turbo 2.5L H6 for the S model, and then 4 cylinders on the base model, but discount the price on the base model. Or shrink the bores even more to get a 2.3L H6 on the base model. The 981 base engine had a crazy short 72.5mm stroke. They could shrink the bore to 85mm which would still be quite reasonable as far as heat conduction losses go. Those changes would reduce the weight and size of the engine by a huge amount.

Not only is switching to a 4 cylinder engine crap, adding injury to insult is the 718's weight gain. Up to 100 lb depending on model and options. PLUS they reduced the size of the fuel tank as well (you can still get the previously sized 16.9 gallon tank - as an option) so there's more weight there as well. The 718 has a complex 2 stage intercooler system, as well as active engine mounts to try to quell the vibrations created by a 4 cylinder engine. The 6 cylinder engine needed none of this.

Oh, and fuel efficiency hasn't improved. In fact the 718 S is rated worse than it's predecessor on the hwy cycle.

The Cayman/Boxster wasn't switched to a 4 cylinder to make it better. It was switched to a 4 cylinder to put more distance between it and the 911. That doesn't mean it's not a great car. But a lot of people have serious reservations about spending $80k+ on a sports car with 4 cylinders, regardless of it's performance.

Sadly the Cayman Boxster have never been popular as they are excellent.

Although Porsche is best known for its iconic sports cars, the company's financial and sales performance has largely been driven by the success of its crossover SUVs.

Honestly, if you can buy one of the twins brand new, you can buy a 987. The insurance is similar, running costs are more but if it's not a daily driver for long distances or track car the cost is doable. The prices on replacement parts might look scary but if it's a once every 5-10 years kind of thing that is not actually that much money. Similarly, 2.5x more on an oil change is not a whole lot of dollars in absolute terms. Of course if you track the car, then the extra fluids, tires, and brakes add up very quickly.

A few k over several years is nothing when it comes to cars. Buy a car that's new instead of 1 year old, that's several k right there. From 1 year to 2 years to 3 is several k each year in depreciation. Parking in a big city is several k a year, if you live in such a place. Each time you switch cars, you incur sales tax which is another few hundred to a few thousand depending on what you bought.

I kind of want an Aston Martin V8 Vantage as a "cruiser" someday when I have parking space, because they look great and have depreciated like crazy. It's pretty affordable as long as you don't pile the miles on and have a garage to park it in.

FWI track/race pads for a BRZ only cost about $50 less than track/race pads for my 987. Granted the 987 will wear through pads faster, but it also wears them more evenly due to the 4 piston brakes and a rear weight basis. Floating caliper design brakes are usually a bit uneven and a BRZ's front brakes are subject to more stress than the fronts on a 987.
