Trade in RX8 for FR-S??

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum & I currently drive a 2005 RX8 which I'm strongly considering trading in on an FR-S or BRZ this summer when they're released. Of course, my decision will hang on the pricing but what do you think?

Like I said, it's a 2005 RX8, it's got 81,000km (Yep, Canadian), it's automatic & I owe less than $9,000 currently. By the time the FR-S is released I hope to owe under $7,000 which will give me some room on the trade-in value as I see cars in like-shape, higher mileage going anywhere from $8,000-$11,000.

I love the Mazda but the way I see it, there's just too many up-sides to trading in this car for a FR-S or BRZ (MANUAL no f***in' automatic this time!) at this point in my financing & the RX8's life, that I can't resist it!

Anyway, I was wondering if any you guys could weigh in.

The RX-8 is a pretty solid handler, so unless the power is the big difference (I hear that auto RX-8's have even less power than the sticks) the only other real reasons to trade in are the better gas mileage (assumption) in the FR-S and not needing to add oil now and then like in the RX-8.

If it's worth it to you do it.

I can see your concern as you'll set your debt back another $20k USD on a very similar car. Depends on what it's worth to you.

But going from auto to manual makes for a profoundly different driving experience so that's one thing that makes the switch more worth it. Plus the fresh feeling of a new car. Both have unconventional engines but the RX-8 is more-so. I prefer the styling of the 86 but I think they'll start popping up everywhere on the roads. Similar thing happened when the 350Z and then the 370Z came out. The RX-8 has a stronger aura of exclusivity than these cars.

JW, how many miles have you owned your RX-8 and have you experienced any engine problems during ownership?

I bought the RX8 at about 65,000KM (4 years ago this July/2012) and it's still on the original motor. Also, I store it from about December to mid-May. As far as problems with the engine, I haven't had any but I'm aware that the Renesis is notorious for compression issues (especially the earlier models like mine) and that's also a major factor in my decision to trade on the FR-S, as I continue to log miles.

I love the car & it is reliable with the proper care but I guess it's to say I'd like something MORE reliable; in the sense that I don't have to worry about flooding it, or mechanics flooding it because they're ignorant to what's under the hood when/if I have to take it into a garage and also in the sense that, it seems these engine are like ticking time bombs as to when they're going to take a shit. Besides those reasons, like you said Switch, I seriously want to swap for a manual.

As far as them popping up everywhere on the roads, that's really not a concern I have; around the time I bought my Mazda I was one of the only (or at least, few) in my area to have one. Within 5 months, I was seeing them all over the place. And I live in a relatively lowly populated area. But at the time they were starting to sell at an attractive price so I'm assuming others were thinking as I was!

Thanks for the responses guys! And Fortunate, good idea! I'm warming up to it myself haha

just remember that the majority of people on this site feel that the RX-8 is the car most similar to the FR-S/BRZ.

You will be trading it for the gas mileage, new car smell, and hopefully reliability.
Of course there are other differences, but these two cars will be close relatives.

You'll also lose those two handy little back doors.

Maybe we should all test drive the car and see it in person before we suggest that someone make large financial decisions to buy it/not buy it.

I'm getting rid of my 987 Cayman S to make room for the 86... So trading the RX8 for the 86 would be a wiser decision!

No Offense, but auto RX8 has to be one of the slowest cars I've ever driven. Not to mention its so inefficient. just the money u save on gas is probably enough for you to lease a 86 in america
